Evening all. I’ve had a search but couldn’t find anything…

I’ll be moving house in a few months and currently have full fibre. My new address is on an unmade road with no fibre connected. Openreach and all of the Altnets I’ve looked at have no plans to upgrade there - likely due to it being an unmade road.

Where would I stand with cancelling mid contract? It looks like I’ll be better getting an EE 5g hub or similar.

Thanks

As I understand it, you will be charged for cancellation. I would do the sums to work out whether it is worth the hit of losing speed and asking to be downgraded to FTTC for the rest of the contract, that's assuming that it's both available and capable of usable speed.

I would say it has nothing to do with the unmade road, just no current plans for the area - I live in a town with no current forecast of FTTP in my locale although all the older properties in the town served by overhead wires have it. In a different area OR have recently laid fibre along around a mile of forest track with only 2 houses to serve.

Personally, unless the broadband (over copper) in the new location is completely hopeless, I would just change your address and let the contract complete.

You will pay a significant proportion of the remaining contract price to cancel and it would at least provide something to compare 5G performance with.

Starlink may be another option to think about.

Is the new address unlikely to get coverage and might it be covered by any of the assistance schemes?

Only a member of staff can give you an accurate figure for early termination charges and only when you have a moving date. A rough estimate is the number of months left minus a discount for PN costs not incurred.

Can you post a screen image from the following. Entry the post code only and select the address from the drop down list.

There is a restriction on images until you've posted 3 or 5 (can't remember which) times.

The results are telling us you have FTTC available (SOGEA) which would give between 32 and 51 down.

You could try the PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 to see what they say about you downgrading from Full Fibre to SOGEA due to a house move.

While not a great FTTC service it looks usable.

Personally I wouldn't rely on 5G unless you are extremely close to a mast.

When considering whether to downgrade to FTTC or cancel, there is another decision to take into consideration. There are two options if staying:

1. Start a new contract, which will just cost the price of the new deal, with no other charges.

2. See if they will let you downgrade with your current contract end date, which might incur a £65 moving fee. See: https://www.plus.net/help/my-account/moving-home-or-office/

Ring the Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 and see what you can negotiate, not losing sight of prices increasing on all contracts at the end of next month, which is worth haggling over.

The move won't be for a few months (from the original post) and I would hang fire untill a moving date is known before making contact with plusnet.

The comments around the two options are good.
