Allowing ICMP traffic on the Thomson 585v7 4-port router

The default policy for the Thomson 585v7 wireless 4-port router is for it to block inbound ICMP requests. This means that the router will not respond to ping or traceroute requests that are directed to it from an external connection.

Some networking tasks require that your router accepts ICMP traffic so you may find yourself in a position where you need to enable this functionality.

Whilst this is not possible using the router's web console, it can be achieved using the CLI interface.

  1. Open a command/terminal/console window. In Windows this can be done by clicking Start, Run, typing 'cmd' (minus the quotes) and clicking OK.
  2. In the window that appears connect to the router using Telnet as follows:telnet_connect
  3. You'll be asked to enter the username and password for the router. This is *not* the same as your broadband username and password. Unless you've manually changed it to something else you should enter Administrator as the username and leave the password blank:auth
  4. Once connected you need to issue the following commands to allow incoming ICMP traffic on the WAN interface:
    service system ifadd name=PING_RESPONDER group=wan
    saveall
    commands

  5. Close the command window. You should find that your router now responds to ICMP:trace_accepted
