End of Day - 5th September

September 5th, 2008 at 06:40 pm by Dave Tomlinson

Well I intend to write and post today’s end of day a little earlier than the one I wrote last week. Oh and use a mouse too so we’ll hopefully have a bit of formatting. It’s the end of another week and the weather has certainly taken a turn for the miserable. Is that all the summer we’re going to have this year? More…

End of Day: 2nd September

September 2nd, 2008 at 06:16 pm by Peter Jackson

Of course I’ll start today’s EOD with an update about its start of day.  As has been reported in Service Status, at about 7am we had a loss of power to one of our data centres in Sheffield.  You may have experienced intermittent issues with our systems during the affected period, including website and email.  It’s never nice to see things go wrong but always heartening to see how quickly and effectively our network team can jump on and resolve such issues.

Bob tells us more about this later, and why it’s not always possible to rely on backup systems to automatically take over. More…

End of Day: 1st September

September 1st, 2008 at 05:49 pm by Tamlyn Rhodes

We had a bit of a desk shuffle today on the Web Team floor. Anybody watching on the webcams will have seen a lot of running about and computer swapping going on around 5pm. Fortunately there’s no sound so you couldn’t hear the screaming and swearing! Only kidding, it was pretty painless… or at least it was for me and Jonny who didn’t have to move at all :D More…

Safe Surfing Trial - Update and Next Steps

September 1st, 2008 at 11:33 am by Chris Parr

Aladdin logoSome of you may remember that back in May we blogged asking for some volunteers to come and trial a safe surfing system called Aladdin.

We are now several months down the line and it’s time to bring the trial phase to an end. We’ve asked those involved in the trial to give us feedback on how the trial went and how it could be improved as a service.

Performing this trial has helped us identify that this type of service is one which would offer great value to our customers, although there is still plenty of work for us to do on aspects of the product before we are in a position to fully launch it.

We’ll let you know as soon as we have further information about how and when we plan to launch our Parental Control product.

Thanks

Chris Parr

Computer Weekly.com IT Blog Awards Update

August 29th, 2008 at 01:46 pm by Colin Ogilvie

Back at the beginning of July, we discovered the Community Site had been nominated for the ComputerWeekly.com IT Blog Awards. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful in winning the award, but consider it a privilege to have made it to the shortlist, beating the likes of the Google Blog.

Well done to the winner, Steve Clayton: Geek in Disguise.

End of Day: 28th August

August 28th, 2008 at 05:44 pm by Tamlyn Rhodes

Until today, the only way I could get my personal laptop online when at the office was by using my mobile phone as a modem and and using its data connection. It seemed kinda funny that I was sat in the head office of a major ISP and I couldn’t even get wifi access! Anyway we got it working properly today so I can be more mobile - yay! More…
