SMF Forum software

Hi - I wonder of one or more of the Mod's  and people who know about this software would be prepared to help with a few questions on how one sets this up on your own server and manages it. ?
I know I could go over to SMF's own forum, and I will obviously - but just to answer a few questions.

Re: SMF Forum software

I'm in the middle of setting up SMF 2.0 RC2 on the PAYH server. I think I've got it all correct now. Next step is the Mambo Bridge to integrate it.
Edit: Shouldn't this topic be in Web and Internet?

Re: SMF Forum software

I see the SMF website itself is using 2.0 RC2 - so it must be near to release ?

Re: SMF Forum software

It should be near to release but there's a bit of an internal tussle going on at SMF at the moment which seems to be distracting people. That said, I've done a lot of investigation and decided that the extra features that SMF 2 has over SMF 1 and the avoidance of an upgrade at a later date outweighs the small risk of problems (they've been using previous SMF 2 releases on their own site for a considerable time).

Re: SMF Forum software

@II thanks for that link
@Jelv - I meant no mods responded to my question.
But regarding putting SMF onto PAYH servers. I have one of the 'trial accounts which I use as a small test bed. and another paid account for a small charity website I do
But that is only a relatively small capaicty  350M webspave and 2G traffic per month . My website already takes up 100M+ and traffic is about 50% capacity, I wonder if that is enough for a semi public forum that could fill up the disc allocation.
I see other webhosting option that provide 1.5G webspace and 30G traffic for the same money, and they have the option to install CMF, and other applications using automatic installation software such as Softaculous or Installtron, that also manage software updates.
I suppose what I am saying is how much webspace do you need for a light traffic SMF and is it as easy to install SMF/ set up MYSQL by just downloading a package from the SMF site. ?
Bear in mind that probably unlike you I am not an expert in Linux so making manual adjustments to files may be a challenge.

Re: SMF Forum software

SMF has a kind of installer.  You upload the files with FTP (will take a while, there are lots) then run http://site.url/install.php or something.  You'll need the hostname for the database, as well as the username/password for the database, it'll then set up the config file on it's own.
First thing you'll want to do with SMF is edit the templates and change the meta tags.  Spam bots use google to search for forums, they find the forums because the meta tags say "SMF Forum" or something like that, they then sign up and pretty soon google will have your site listed with the top key words being viagra and the like.
Bandwidth wise, it shouldn't take up too much with a low member count.  I actually like SMF, you can find some pretty decent themes out there (or make your own!).

Re: SMF Forum software

Thanks
the forum we are considering will be private, with different levels of access, rather like this PN one, so presumeably meta noindex, nofollow, nocache etc will keep google out at least and making most only visible to people with accounts and have signed in.

The first thread;

Except that in said 'first thread' we refer to threads that existed whilst we were testing.
SMF was also used for other stand-alone forums that PN used for managing specific project contacts/discussion.
