Broadband Phone Software/Hardware Setup

petermaughan,

Changing your FTP settings to passive mode sometimes helps with lock ups.

Not sure what VOIP kit I've got, it cost me £20 and is a small silver oval box with VOIP Communications written on the top, no other identifying features.
(Edit found it: ATA GATE 101 - http://www.digidave.co.uk...ts_id=325&ref=froogle)

Changed the Server, Proxy, UserID & Password, works a charm - left it using the xten stun server though.

Some feedback:

Nice that caller ID now works (for outgoing calls).

Seems very responsive, but then not many users yet.

Not sure voice quality is as good as it could be, recommended CODEC?

Latency on loopback around 100-200ms

Have the included minutes been transferred across?

Thanks for the 50p credit!

My Thomson Speedtouch 780WL has registered successfully with the service.
   Product Name:         ST780
   Software Release:    6.2.17.5

The following ‘Telephony Service Configuration’ settings were used:
   Registrar:           sip2.plus.net
   Registrar Port:    5060
   Proxy:               nat.plus.net
   Proxy Port:        5082
   Expire Time:       3600

The relevant SIP ID / URI, User Name and Password were entered under the’ Telephony Identity’ settings.

After initially entering the above configuration details into the router it did not register with the service nor did it register after doing a soft reset of the router.  However, after physically switching off the router, leaving it for a minute and switching it back on again it registered successfully.

It is good to see that the geographical number associated with the VOIP service works with Caller ID and therefore recipients of calls are now able to identify who is calling.

On the VOIP page, towards the bottom, there is an Advanced Settings button. This displays another page that will allow you to enter proxy, nat and stun settings.

I got my P2002 working last night but haven't had time to post to this forum yet - I don't use the proxy settings as I always use the non-proxy option in my phone book.

Regards.

Many thanks Pyxis.

Forgive my ignorance, is the SIP proxy setting the Outbound Proxy section and if so, does nat.plus.net go in the Server Address field and 5082 in Server Port field?

My existing menu has no value in either STUN or Use NAT sections, per PlusNet's instructions for the 2002L.  Is that OK?

I don't understand the comment about the non-proxy option in your 'phone book!  Again, sorry!

Regards and thanks again.....Noel

BT Business Hub (aka 2Wire 2700HGV) configured and working.

For info config is:-
Profile Name:     PlustalkVoipTrial
VOIP Service Type:    SIP
Server IP Address:    sip2.plus.net
Server Port:    5060
Domain:    sip2.plus.net
Register Expire Time:    3600
Register Retry Interval:    300
Use 11-digit DIDs:    No
Show CID Names:    Yes
Require Authentication:  Yes

Username: <sip id>
Authname: <sip id>
Password:<sip password>

Also tried Sjphone and that works ok. Just change domain and proxy to the Voip Trial ones in the email and change the username and password to the new ones.

Have got a Voyager10V ATA lying around somewhere so may get around to trying that at the weekend.

Good news so far. Keep up the good work guys.

ZyXEL Prestige 2002 (P2002)

ZyNOS Firmware Version: V3.60(MD.4) | 08/22/2005

VoIP Page

  • SIP Number: <Your SIP ID>
  • SIP Local Port: 5060
  • SIP Server Address: sip2.plus.net
  • SIP Server Port: 5060
  • REGISTER Server Address: sip2.plus.net
  • REGISTER Server Port: 5060

Press Advanced Settings button to display Advanced VoIP Settings page if you want to set the Outbound Proxy:

Yes, you're correct. Try it without any proxy settings first. Mine works fine without it on SIP and PSTN calls.

You really only need the Outbound Proxy set if you want to call another SIP ID, for example sip:123456@draytel.org, which of course you can't dial on your telephone. In this case I would either use the prefix for a peered network (see http://community.plus.net...dex.php/topic,1654.0.html), which in this example would mean that I would dial **372 123456 on my telephone, or set up a speed dial in my phone book on the P2002.

In the phone book add a speed dial, for example, on #01 enter 123456 in SIP Number and, in Type, select Non-Proxy and enter draytel.org. Then you can just enter #01 on your phone to call 123456@draytel.org.

If you activate the proxy, then in your phonebook you could add 123456@draytel.org in SIP Number and leave the type as Use Proxy, which will then use the proxy to work out how to get to draytel.org. I've found though that I've never had to do this and prefer to leave my proxy settings off.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Mark

Mark, many thanks for the unambiguous, detailed and well presented explanation.

Not only have you answered my question, but you have given me a better understanding of the 'phone book.

I am grateful for your time.

A lot of people don't like softphones, but if you are working at your computer anyway, then one of their advantages is that you can dial 123456@draytel.org directly.

Another couple of questions, PyXis....

Mark, Is there a "common practice" setting for the PSTN prefix?

Do you set your Codec at G729>711?

Regards....Noel

Hi Noel,

I'm not quit sure what you mean by a "common practice" setting? I have tried PSTN numbers in my P2002 phonebook with +44 and +64 and they work OK. I've also used the usual 01xxx UK dialling code and that works OK too.

I haven't changed any of the codec settings so it's still the default, which I think is what you've put above.

Regards.

Pyxis....Sorry about the confusion.

I am referring to the PSTN prefix number in Phone book/Lifeline.

Preceding the PSTN number with the prefix ensures the call is a landline call instead of a broadband call.  In some cases this is cheaper, eg 0870 and 0845 calls and, in my case an uncapped free evening and week-end period.  I just thought there might be a common setting for this number rather than everyone make up their own!

I think the codec default is 711>729, however, not important, I think PlusNet is G729, so that would be the speed anyway.

These a small matters , sorry to have bothered you!

Regards

Oh, OK. I've got the P2002 not the P2002L so I don' t have the option of routing over PSTN.
