Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

I'm on Unlimited Fibre Extra so doesn't really matter but was curious why quoted usage differs noticeably between PN (always higher) figures and those of my router.
Last 5 days PN vs Router
Sun 11.54GB vs 9.82
Sat 21.65GB vs 18.84
Fri 15.28GB vs 12.60
Thur 28.25GB vs 25.90
Wed 48.66GB vs 41.19
Any ideas why this would be?

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

The figures are also reset on the Router if your PPP session restarts.

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

My Fritz!Box retains bandwidth usage through PPP drops and DSL resyncs, it also appears to be recording noticeably less (around 9% different on yesterday's figure) than 'VMBU'.

Not retained on the 2704n (when I last experimented) can't recall with the 582n, will need to check.

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

FYI, I believe that OP is using their own router (well, we didn't send one on their provision).
I'd be intrigued to see which model it is.

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

Could it be the difference between 1GB being 230 as opposed to 109
i.e.
1,073,741,824 vs 1,000,000,000
But that would still only account for about 7% difference

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

Ah, another thought, Plusnet's figures will also include traffic to the modem/router that your Router Firewall is blocking (unsolicited traffic). Do you have the Plusnet Firewall in the Member Centre turned on to help minimise such traffic?

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

I'm using an ASUS DSL-AC68U and it retains usage figures between re-syncs not that it does that unless I make a change.
I'm not using PN Firewall but the one on the router is active.
I also thought about different way to calculate GB but came up with the same conclusion.

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

If you don't need any of the ports that the PN Firewall blocks on the Low setting, I'd recommend you set it to that Wink

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

Thanks for the advice. The router firewall is pretty good and customisable. The grc.com site gives me full marks for stealth etc.

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

I think you are missing my point. It blocks a fair bit of unsolicited traffic from being delivered to your connection - this traffic gets counted as usage! It has nothing to do with how good or customisable your Router Firewall is.

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

Ah right I see.
So going back to my question are you saying that this unsolicited traffic (if there is any) will be getting counted by PN but not my router.? If so that a LOT...!!

Re: Quoted Usage - PN vs Router

It won't get counted by the Router because it doesn't get passed through the Router if the Firewall is blocking it Wink
