Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

Excellent, lets get all Mac users to download and run some program off some random website, claiming it will "check for malware". What could possibly go wrong...  Roll_eyes

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

Or you could go to the Russian Dr. Web website and download their malware checker, who originated this rumour, bearing in mind the malware originated in Russia, and other Mac professionals speculate as to whether they in fact produced the malware, in order to sell their product !!
No links, it's out there.
600,000 !
It's just a projection from them, and apparently includes Windows PC's too !

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

No sign of it on my computer but seeing as I usually surf with Java disabled, it was highly unlikely that anything would turn up.

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

Most of us are too poor - or mean - to pay the extra for a Mac
Of course there was the case of a friend who's high end Mac laptop died - it was diagnosed as a failed motherboard (whatever Apple call them) replacement cost over £1,000 so she bought a Win 7 machine for a lot less which does everything she wants.
Before you ask the original was a hand-me-down from her son

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

Well I'm not exactly "rolling in money" and currently I've got zero income. How did I afford my Mac laptop I hear you ask, well it was from work.
Our first Mac at home was back in 1990, if I recall correctly.

Of course I have exactly the opposite view, but then I have use Macs (and PC's too in the past) for over 25 years now, and speaking from practical experience, I disagree with what you say.
It is of course your choice not to buy any Apple products, but I assure you that is an unwarranted prejudice, and I have yet to meet a gullible Apple user, or one who has not been delighted at actually buying Apple !
Well worth any perceived premium.

Also a mac user since early '90s. Not so sure about the OS these days. The iMac has screen stain issues that Apple will not recognise or give advice about, and has not been fixed since 2009.
Gone right off the company in the past couple of years.

But that is another Russian company so not too be trusted - they are just trying to increase sales of their product to gullible Mac users  Crazy

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

blimey, its getting a bit confusing around here about who's gullible!  Undecided
What with the apple tribe in denial and the companies after a profit out it...
I do remember reading a forum somewhere a couple of weeks ago with quite a few mac folks having been infected - but I can't find it now!
Intego seem to think there's an issue...

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

Of the three Macs I have looked at in the last few days, two said they needed the update but the third did not; presumably because it had already been applied?  Not being very familiar with Macs, I was surprised that they seemed to be waiting for user intervention to install the update rather than applying it spontaneously.  Is this normal?
I presume if you had an infected machine then applying the update would be locking the atable door after the horse has bolted but nothing I have read has commented on this aspect.

Apple Software update can be done manually at any time.
Or..... Automatically daily, is that not frequent enough ?

Re: Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

But only after Apple release the upgrade which in this case was 8 weeks after the upgrade for Windows machines was released.
This is why they have the problem.
