Need help with poor speed & lost connections

Hey, having temp moved back to my parents' from a country where I had 1giga FTTH I am appalled at their "broadband", hoping someone can help me improve our service.
One of the main issues is reliability, as I am trying to VPN to a corporate network, but it won't hold a stable connection
I think we're quite far from the local exchange, and I understand the line quality is not that great, but we get:
a lot of disconnects,
very, very slow web browsing
a lot of 'hangs' where the router doesn't seem to have disconnected, but webpages are unresponsive
we're not using any p2p,
downloading more than one thing in iTunes seems to kill the line,
Steam is a massive fustration,
the max speed I get from downloading a file from a big CDN is about 500k/s (but is more often around 100k/s) - is this the stage we are still in in good old blighty? I mentioned having FTTH purely so you could put my speed expectations into place - Steam would download at 30 meg a sec!
I ran the BT speed check thing last night, hopefully attached a screenshot. Let me know what else might help.
We had an old Netgear model/router, but I just bought a Billion 7700N to see if it improved matters; it did not. Yesterday it started off at around 7770 sync speed, down at 5900 now.

Re: Need help with poor speed & lost connections

It looks as thought the default noise margin is 12dB which is restricting the speed quite a bit.
It will have been increased due to perceived line instability
The first thing to do is to try the test socket and report the speeds, attenuation and noise margin and also see if the line is more stable
However in relation to VPN are your parents on Value as VPN is heavily restricted on that - to 512kbps

Re: Need help with poor speed & lost connections

Thanks very much for the reply
so basically try the different phone sockets in the house and see which is more stable? I might try a different filter too I suppose. Have they changed at all in the past several years?
Looking in the member centre, it says:
Plusnet Extra
If different sockets don't help (and a bit impractical as the main PC is connected via ethernet), what other options are there? Anyway, I'll see if I can post up some more reports tomorrow.
Also, why on earth is VPN traffic throttled?

No you try the test socket - this video explains

Re: Need help with poor speed & lost connections

thanks Jim
of course the sweet irony is that it took about 15 mins to watch the video as I couldn't even watch it at 240p size Cheesy
anyway have found the master socket so will try that tomorrow and report back

Re: Need help with poor speed & lost connections

Hi YhsG37uiYY,
How are you getting on with your connection? Have you tried your test socket?
Below is a log of your connection
<img src="http://ccgi.psmith12.plus.com/visradius/generated/image13442457561438.png" />
Your connection has been stable for the past 12 hours, but the last few afternoons/evenings have seen the most disconnections.
If you have tried the test socket and a different micro-filter, I'd suggest raising a fault at http://faults.plus.net
If possible I'd also try another router if you've done the above and are still experiencing problems.
Any further questions just give me a shout.
Chris

Re: Need help with poor speed & lost connections

Hey, thanks for the replies.
I tried out the master test socket - because it is farrrr away from the PC room, I moved the modem and used the laptop to see how it connected. I don't have the data to hand but it seemed better than previously. I also changed out the micro-filters. I suspect seriously bad wiring as part of the cause, along with distance to exchange and a poor quality BT line.
I am now running a telephone ext lead to the master socket (not the inside test socket) and below is what the router/modem is reporting - the attainable rate looks much better, but the SNR is massive (isn't it?) and in real-life use I can still barely stream a youtube vid at min resolution:
