Has my Broadband Product been changed?

I have been with Plusnet for many years and from what I can remember the last product change I made was in 2006 to Broadband Plus at £14.99 per month and believe I am still on this, however has the profiling of this product changed as I am getting ridiculously slow speeds in the evening now?
I thought BB+ was unlimited, would I be better off switching to Plusnet Extra, can someone at Plusnet check out my account to see why I was only getting 0.19Mb/s last night but 6-8Mb/s during the day?

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

It isn't unlimited as you get throttled to hell if you exceed the 10GB peak allowance and 100GB off peak allowance http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/products/archive/broadband_plus_archive.shtml
Quote
4. What's the usage allowance?
As of 25th November 2010, the peak time (4pm-Midnight) usage limit is 10GB and the off peak limit (midnight-4pm) is 100GB.
Broadband Plus was originally designed for a maximum usage of 4GB peak times (4pm-Midnight) and 50GB off peak (midnight-4pm) in any given month.
5. What happens if I go over my monthly usage?
If your usage goes over 10GB during peak times or 100GB off peak in a given month, your service will be heavily restricted until the start of your next billing month when your usage is reset.
It sounds like you have exceeded the 10GB allowance and are being restricted in the evenings

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Thanks for that Oldjim, yes you are right, have gone over 10GB in off peak time, didn't realise that it would be throttled so much, pity no warning when approaching the limits.
So with this product need to keep any streaming etc before 4pm...
I am retired so most of my PC use is during daytime and very little in evenings, so would I be better or worse off with Plusnet Extra?

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

You need to look at your total monthly usage as from your description nearly all of your usage would be counted as chargeable on Extra as the off peak will be modnight to 8.00am
Note that unless you are in a Market 2 or 3 area your bill will go up - for Market 2 and 3 it is £11.49 but for Market 1 it is £17.99

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Looks like I am in Market 2 area.     Smiley
My monthly usage for last 3 months is..
Billing Period Peak usage Off-Peak usage Total usage
19 Jul - 18 Aug 6.26GB 15.02GB 21.29GB
19 Aug - 18 Sep 1.36GB 7.46GB 8.81GB
19 Sep - 18 Oct 5.84GB 8GB 13.84GB
Usage Breakdown for this month is...
Activity Peak usage Off-peak usage Total usage
Web 6.11GB 7.87GB 13.98GB
Email 92.64MB 115.17MB 207.81MB
Broadband phonecalls 758.28KB 1.13MB 1.89MB
Gaming 3.26MB 4.72MB 7.99MB
Streaming 3.43GB 14.18GB 17.62GB
PlusNet FTP 0KB 0KB 0KB
Peer-to-peer 177.16MB 5.31GB 5.48GB
Usenet 0KB 1.79KB 1.79KB
FTP (non PlusNet) 1.99KB 562.52MB 562.52MB
Other 430.78MB 149.72MB 580.5MB
Total usage so far 10.25GB 28.19GB 38.44GB
So I could go up to 60GB between midnight and 6pm compared to 100GB between midnight and 4pm, so if I don't go over 60GB during peak time I would be better off, is that right?
The only downside I see is it would cost £25 activation fee and I don't need a router or any of the other extras, is there anyway to avoid activation fee, don't want phone but would be happy to sign for a years contract?

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

You are correct - it is a win win situation for you
Note that there isn't an activation fee on product change and if you don't want the router don't tick the box saying you want one and  you would stay on your present 10 days notice
Just go to https://portal.plus.net/apps/account/change?bolWizReset=1 and follow the wizard. The change will happen at your next billing date
Note that previously a Market 2 price was higher but they are presently giving it for the same price as Market 3 and this won't change for users who have moved to the new deal

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Thanks for that Oldjim, if I opted for a router is it any different to the Thomson TG585 V7 I have now?

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

It is the v8 of the same router - me I wouldn't touch a Thomson router at any price - but it will still cost you £4.99 postage so why bother

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Okay, will keep existing router for time being.
I can't see any option to tick box for router, does this follow my acceptance of T&Cs also no mention of the activation fee not applying, it only shows new monthly charge, would it be on the summary page if it applied?

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Netgear DG834G v4 with the Broadcom Chipset and when that gives up the ghost I will probably go to the Billion 7700n as by then I will probably want Wireless N

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

I have no idea why you don't see it.
If I click on Change my product or Keep my product I get this screen - see the bar across the top showing the stage you are at
It won't mention the £25 activation charge as that is the charge for activating broadband on the line and nothing to do with changing products

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Had you considered the Value Broadband Product; it's a lot cheaper than Extra?  That has a 10G usage limit during its peak period of 8 am to midnight but unlimited usage between midnight and 8am.  I'm on this product and my total usage for the last three months has been, 5, 14 & 33 GB but I have not exceeded my 10G peak allowance by making careful use of the free period.  And if you do go over the limit it's only £5 per extra 5 GB.

Re: Has my Broadband Product been changed?

Looking at his present usage - the off peak usage on his present product will mostly be peak on the new product - it isn't
Note that over the last 3 months he would have been charged extra on 2 of them and in one case an extra £15
Looking at the present month the total usage to date is 38.44GB so Value is a total non starter

Strange it jumps the select hardware option and goes straight to choose home phone product?Huh
