Packet loss on the Plusnet network

I'm hoping that someone from Plusnet might reply to this.
According to this Service Status update Service Status, the performance problems of the past week seem to be related to a problem network segment, which has now been removed from service until the underlying problem is corrected.  Anyone still seeing problems should need only to disconnect and reconnect to see their performance return to normal.
I have tried this, but I am still seeing very high packet loss on the network.  The details of my problem can be seen here :
http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,93259.0.html
It seems likely that my packet loss is due to the problem that has already been identified, as it first appeared around the middle of last week - it could of course be a coincidence, although the line was fast, and totally reliable prior to then and since I joined Plusnet.  If someone from Plusnet can say that it is unlikely that my problem is related to the issues of the last week, then I'll raise a seperate fault report, but didn't want to do this whilst it looked likely that it was covered by the Service Status notifications.

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

I'm having severe problems with the connection tonight - it's playing havoc with my internet access.
I'm pretty new to Plusnet - is this what is to be normally expected?

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

Hi webwisehost,
Can you post a few traceroutes to the servers you're pinging?

HI, yeah as jelv said this would be more useful. pingtest is not the most reliable result.

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

Is there any further information I can provide?
The problem still persists this morning.  I'm seening constant packet loss, 24/7.  Is the packet loss within the Plusnet infrastucture not indicative of there still being issues within the Plusnet network itself?

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

HI Neil,
We don't see any packet loss on our network. Are you getting any errors reported on your router? Are you able to try a different router? Is it connected via ethernet or wireless?

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

Hi Jojo,
I've tested with three different computers (2 desktops connected via wired Ethernet, 1 laptop via WiFi), 2 different routers and they were connected via the test socket behind the BT master socket faceplate.
What's the packet loss showing on the pathping then?  I have been running that on a regular basis over the past couple of days, and it always shows similar results.  The same with pingtest.com, always showing 2%-8% packet loss and a lot of variation in ping times.  I've just this morning started an external ping log to my router, and the current results are shown on the attached graph (around 12:30 I was downloading some large files for about 15mins) and as you can see there is constant packet loss being shown.  Except for downloading the files, broadband was being used very little during this period, and so few to no lost packets should be seen.
I've done my best to eliminate a problem at my end, and can't think of anything else to do here.  It's really frustrating, as my line stats are good, and speed seems mostly ok (upload lower than normal), but the packet loss is cause havoc with time sensitive applications, and some activity just stalls or hangs - so web pages that just never complete loading, or files that you have to restart the transfer for, or streaming that just stops, etc.
None of this was evident until a week ago Sad
Cheers,  Neil

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

It may be error counts on the hop between your router and the PN gateway (indicating some form of high error and retransmission between you and the exchange).  This can present itself as being very similar to your symptoms.
Can you retrieve the error counts from your router perchance?
Also, when you say your upstream is slightly slower than usual - is that sync speed or transmission speed?  A lower upstream sync is also a red flag for a connection problem between you and the exchange.
Cheers
B.

Re: Packet loss on the Plusnet netwok

Upstream sync is fine, it's transmission speed that is lower than normal.  Varies between just below 100 up to close to 300 at times.  The upload test also sometimes fails.  What seems strange is that the progress bar is pretty stready for about 90% of the test, it then pause/stops, and the measures upload rate begins to decrease during the pause.  Sometimes it never completes and comes back with a file error eventually.
The router I mostly use is a Draytek Vigor 2800, and the web information it provides are limited.  All I have is this:
ADSL Information       (ADSL Firmware Version:  E.38.2.23 )
ATM Statistics TX Blocks RX Blocks Corrected Blocks Uncorrected Blocks
  5912498 32858546 0 2

I used to monitor it via SNMP, and I'm sure there are triggers I could access to log error rates - I'd just need to reinstall the software.
There is also a good telnet interface - I'll have a poke around and see what I can find.  What is the name of what I'll looking for likely to be?
Cheers,  Neil
Post Edit:
I suspect this is more useful, as it shows CRC, FEC and HEC figures.

Anyone see anything untoward in these figures I posted?
I'm continuing to see the same packet loss problems, and have eliminated everything on my side of the BT master socket.

HI webwisehost,
Can you run ping-t to that server and leave it running for about 5 minutes (Ctrl+C will stop it) I'm just going to check some other settings for you.
