I referred a neighbour and he's 2mbps faster than me!

I just referred a near neighbour to Plusnet, and his connection gives 5.89 MBPS while I can only get 3.79 MBPS! He lives two minutes walk from me on the same housing estate with the same exchange. How can this be?

First thing is to connect to the test socket and see what the results are.
Also post your full router stats - noise margin, attenuation and speeds

Re: I referred a neighbour and he's 2mbps faster than me!

I have a similar problem, I receive 4mb and my neighbour who's off the same pole gets 8mb, a neighbour over the road gets 2.5mb. I have consulted BT and the answer was it all depends where in the exchange we are connected, as in he could be the first, I could be the last. As well as just because we run from the same pole does not mean we run the same distance, ie- my connection runs miles further than his before the pole.  So basicly it sucks to be me was there over all response. So I also feel your pain

Re: I referred a neighbour and he's 2mbps faster than me!

attention is in general a reading of how long your line is.
input your attention here and it will give a best effort result (6db noise margin) for your line
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
if your router reports 63db attention, then its likely your atten could be higher as most routers do not report an attention value higher than 63db.

Merci Pierre....
My router reports as follows....
Download Conn. Speed. 5056 kbps Attenuation 36db Noise 15 db
Upload 448 kbps 11.5db 21 db
Speed this morning on Speedtest.net is 3.6 Mbps
Would it be OK if I connected our laptop to the test socket, it would be a major pain in the *** to connect my main PC.

Whether you use the laptop or main PC to get the stats won't make any difference, we just need a direct comparison of the stats (don't leave too long between the before and after as they will vary throughout the day anyway).

OK. Just to be clear...
I plugged the filter into the test socket and then repeated the procedure that gave the earlier results.
The new results were identical except for a higher download speed of 5216,

Re: I referred a neighbour and he's 2mbps faster than me!

Your noise margin is set very high, that is possibly indicative of a lot of disconnections/problems. How often do you turn your router on and off?

I never turn it off.
Might it be relevant that I run three Internet radios on my network?

Is there somewhere else I might ask about this?

This is the best place for advice particularly if one of the PN Digital Care team pick up on it.
They will have a better idea of any line instability you may have which can cause an increase in the noise figure. and a subsequent decrease in your profile.

Re: I referred a neighbour and he's 2mbps faster than me!

Hi anotherbob,
I can't see any drops in your connection logs that may be causing this, but there's definitely some interference somewhere that's causing the sync rates to fluctuate (though not by much - since Feb it's moved from ~4.5mb through to 6.5 and now back to 4mb).
I'd recommend double checking your filters and also testing the connection with the router in the master socket with all other items removed from the line in order to confirm that these aren't causing the changes, if the sync rate is improved when the line is in this state then plug things back in one by one and see which makes the difference.
Hope that helps,

Re: I referred a neighbour and he's 2mbps faster than me!

First I connected the router direct into the test socket without a filter....

Then I connected the router via a new filter....

Then I re-connected my phone to the filter.....

This is what the router is telling me now.

And this should a link from Speedtest.net....

Where does that leave me?
