[Windows] - Free Security Software

Re: [Windows] - Free Security Software

How i agree with ReedRichards' observations on Zone Alarm. My friend (who not at all computer-savvy) has it installed (not by me) and it is forever causing her grief.
She doesn't have a clue what it's asking her to do and neither do I for that matter. I suspect that it was behind frequent disconnections of BB too - possibly denying a process that needed to be allowed.
Kaspersky, on the other hand, only ever bothers me when I put one of my craft CDs in the DVD drive.
On my second computer I just use the Vista firewall at the moment. Used it long-term before Kaspersky and didn't have any problems.
Oh, on the subject of free security software, VISTA FIREWALL CONTROL makes the Vista firewall fully two-way and useful for folk who are not content with one-way protection. Very small piece of software which isn't too troublesome. There is a free version and paid for one.

Re: [Windows] - Free Security Software

I assume my D-Link 2640 router has a built in firewall.  Is this right and where can I see it?
I also use the PN firewall set to 'low'.
Edit:  Just found the D-Link firewall and it's set to 'enable DOS and portscan protection'.

Same for me.
The only time you might need to access the firewall settings is for some P2P programs.
Windows (but not necessarily other OS's) probably requires port scanning protection (it may respond to a few ports, when it shouldn't do).
Try https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 for some tests.

Excellent Security apps here :

particularly :
Unplug n play
Leak Test  (test your firewall)
Shoot the messenger
and MORE.
I would highly recommend Steve Gibsons site.
