CoD 4 Lag Spikes

« on 23/10/2009, 09:04 »
Hi,

I've been with Plusnet for about 5 months now and the first 4 months have been great. I've had a really stable connection and low latency to my favourite CoD 4 servers. That has changed in the last month, unfortunately. When gaming in peak times now, my ping goes from the 30-40ms range to 150ms. Sometimes it stays high for hours and across different servers, other times it's only temporary, lasting a few seconds. I've completed a few traceroutes and the results are as follows;

Tracing route to DS13 [94.76.255.112]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.0.1
  2    47 ms    99 ms    76 ms  lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]
  3    33 ms    51 ms    40 ms  gi2-2-204.ptn-gw02.plus.net [84.92.3.93]
  4    35 ms   227 ms   223 ms  vl31.ptn-gw01.plus.net [195.166.129.1]

  2    39 ms    33 ms    39 ms  lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]

  7    53 ms    38 ms    52 ms  DS13 [94.76.255.112]

Can anybody advise me further please?

Kind regards

I've noticed the same things.

Been on BBYW Pro for 2 years.  Last few weeks I've had really bad pings at peak times.  Currently 175 - on servers I've played for ages.

Hi again,

Here is another from tonight's playing;

Tracing route to 91.191.158.39 over a maximum of 30 hops

 1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.0.1
 2    35 ms    52 ms    50 ms  lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]
 3    33 ms    41 ms    36 ms  gi2-2-204.ptn-gw02.plus.net [84.92.3.93]
 4    39 ms    44 ms    45 ms  te2-2.pte-gw2.plus.net [212.159.1.106]
 5    42 ms    37 ms    33 ms  80.239.193.141
 6    39 ms    51 ms    45 ms  ldn-bb2-link.telia.net [80.91.248.94]
 7    42 ms    43 ms    34 ms  ldn-b5-link.telia.net [80.91.250.168]
 8    35 ms    37 ms    42 ms  213.248.74.2
 9    57 ms    47 ms    36 ms  195.219.243.1
10    47 ms    59 ms    52 ms  195.219.243.38
11   144 ms    49 ms    41 ms  eqx-6k2.euroweb-network.com [195.219.247.2]
12    64 ms    50 ms    48 ms  ix2-gw1-6k.euroweb-network.com [78.41.236.65]
13    45 ms    41 ms    44 ms  91.191.158.39

My ping sat at 150 all game while my fellow UK players on the server were at 30-50ms.
Can i get an official reply on this, "....yes we know it's happening and we are looking at sorting it out". I use my broadband to play a lot of online games, so a good ping is paramount, otherwise i feel i'm not getting what i'm paying you for. I understand that my broadband speed may vary at times but my latency should not, unless you are overselling your bandwith.

Kind regards

Rizla

i wouldnt worry about that hops poor responce as all over hops after it are fine so the icmp packets are routed through that poor hop fine to its final dest, the poor hop probally has more improtant things to do than reply to you like routing your final dest packet through quickly. if all hops after that one was poor and slightly higher than the last then yes i would point fingers at that hop then

Again my ping sat around 130-150ms the whole time of playing, others on the server all pinged under 80ms, why is this happening?

Erm, that's not a gateway I recognise either.

@Rixla - Do you still get the same traceroute when you reboot your router?

I join a game and its 60 MS, then it jumps up to 150ms + and just stays there, still waiting for a reply from Plusnet. Been waiting 2 weeks, provided a Winshark etc, COD4 and WoW with terrible pings compared to what it was with BT.

Yup exactly the same for me, any server I join my ping starts off fine (about 40) then after the same amount of time on each server my  ping shoots up to 130 until i quit.
So it definitely looks as though the traffic is being miss-managed.
This only happens in the evenings obviously, The support team have accepted my request to have cod4 traffic prioritized correctly (Can't understand why it wasn't on a two year old game) Could all the issues with the network and pipes dropping have caused games to be thrown out of the correct traffic management categories?  Undecided

@ Jameseh

I'll test it again while gaming tonight.

I join a game and its 60 MS, then it jumps up to 150ms + and just stays there

Yeah this is the exact same experience i'm having, it's really frustrating!

Hi again,

Tonight is the first night i've played in over a month that my ping has stayed normal. I don't know if others have experienced this too? If so, whatever you have done has remedied the problem, if not, do whatever you've done to my connection to theirs too!  Smiley

I'll see how it goes over the next few nights.

Not just an evening issue.  COD4 currently has 190 ping for me : 12:00 Sunday, on a UK server I've played for years.

it's a peak time issue, todays been even worse than usual for me - which I didn't think was possible.
I've given my mac code to my new isp, seriously dissapointed pn.
For the sake of all the customers still paying money for your service I hope you get this sorted out soon; it's a joke.

First of all i would like to say hello to everyone.

Now i have been a plusnet 'PRO' customer since the 5th of October, i am fast approaching my first full month with plusnet. And for the past 7-10 days i have been getting the exact same problem as rizla... when i join a server my ping is like 60ms and after about 2min it jumps upto between 130-160ms. Does anyone know what is going on?

I moved to plusnet (£20pm) from o2 (£9pm) because o2 were restricting gaming traffic during peek times!!!! I advised the plusnet customer service guy when i called to sign up that this was my issues and he assured me i wouldnt have the same issue with plusnet esspecially since i was willing to pay through the nose for the 'PRO' package.

Everything was fine for the first 2 weeks, so why now in the last 7 to 10 days am i and other people having high ping issues? when i have plusnet 'PRO'Huh?

Please help Mr.Plusnet

Yours worryingly MrComplex!
