Browsing through treacle again

Right,  I've raised a ticket about this -  30333172

This has got beyond a joke, either Akamai is dying or Plusnet have screwed something up.

Guys, sorry to hear you're havign problems this evening, just come here fresh from reading this post.

I'm on pcl-ag04 and I didn't think things were too bad but http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/ has just taken a fair while to load for me but the iPlayer diagnostics tests all come back at 4Mb+ for me so no problems there.

pcl-ag02 doesn't  look overly congested either Steve. I've had a quick look at some of our other graphing and despite being pretty out of balance at the moment, there's nothing glaringly obvious there.

I'll make sure this gets raised tomorrow morning so that we can get somebody more versed to take a look at things...

Bob I posted about a possible problem with Akamai months ago, here, a thread in which you participated!

Bob, I've just had a reply from Plusnet.

Basically it boils down to "hard luck... its not us".

I cannot believe that every evening the entire Akamai server stack grinds to a halt.

It's happening know.  Sites are taking an absolute age to open and more often than not they're timing out!  This coupled with the constant speed problems that I, and other members, am experiencing is making Plusnet look like a complete [Censored] joke of an ISP!

I agree, its been fine during the day but now its back to how it was last night - the bbc news images taking an age, fb taking an age.

I cannot believe that the Akamai server farm buckles under load each night but PN say that if a single site or part of a site is slow to load then its down to that site (or that is how I read their reply to my ticket). The fact that all the sites I have found that are running slow and they all happen to be on Akamai is apparently a pure co-incidence and nothing to do with any odd traffic prioritisation PN have put in place.

Timesonline back to impossible again
Edit - just found there was a download running which I had thought I cancelled. However the download rate was abysmal so presumably hit by the same rate limit as Akamai and it was the global download speed which was throttled which killed the Times download

38 seconds to load:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/h...thern_ireland/default.stm

I've bounced my ticket back to PN asking them if they really are saying that Akamai's sever farm is not up to its job. The fact that everything seems to be fine outside of the "peak" periods and then it grinds to a halt during "peak" times suggests that its something inside PN. I've looked round on other forums and no-one from other ISPs seems to be suffering.

No problems here, about 2 seconds to load that BBC page in the previous post.
Is it just certain gateways which are slow?

EDIT - here's a traceroute to show the gateway i'm on.

Who knows. given that each time my router drops its connection it can take up to 90 seconds to actually reconnect I don't tend to keep disconnecting just to change gateways - not that I need to as my router has rebooted itself once today and the line has dropped and reconnected at least twice since then.

"You are currently connected to the "Telehouse East, Juniper 4" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as pte-ag2. "

it does throw an odd error in my router logs though:

Reconnected to pcl-ag02.

BBC iPlayer diagnostics shows a result of 2170 kbps

My Broadband Speed shows:

Akamai hosted sites still crawling. Other sites like Growlaw, The Register, Livejournal are loading fine

Guys, we haven't lost sight of this and we're aware that some of you are reporting noticeable problems with Akamai hosted content on certain websites. This isn't going to be helping matters either. What does concern me is the broken traceroutes. It might help to run WinMTR or a something similar when the problem's occurring to get a broader idea of how significantly the problem's affecting you?
