Email will be down early Wednesday morning

« on 20/07/2009, 14:04 »
Heads up that I've just posted the following to our Service Status feed.

Quote from: Service Status
Planned Email Storage Maintenance - Wednesday 22nd July 3.00am-6.00am

When's this work happening?
Wednesday morning.

What does it affect?
Email delivery, email collection and access to our Webmail service.

How long will it take?
Up to three hours.

What does the work involve?
We will be upgrading the software used by our email storage platform. This is being done to improve the performance of the platform and ensure that we're keeping up to date with the latest builds.

Is it likely to cause problems?
Incoming email will be delayed for up to three hours whilst the upgrade is carried out. No email will be lost and it will all be delivered once the maintenance is complete. You will not be able to access our Webmail service during the maintenance window and attempts to collect email using POP3 or IMAP are likely to time-out.

Is there anything else I need to know?
No.

Kind Regards,

Heads up that we're rolling this change back so email will be down again for a couple of hours on Wednesday morning (probably around 3.00am):

When's this work happening?
Wednesday Morning.

What does it affect?
Email delivery, email collection and access to our Webmail service.

How long will it take?
About two hours.

What does the work involve?
We recently upgraded the software being used by our email storage platform. We've experienced a few problems behind the scenes since carrying out this upgrade so for the time being we're going to downgrade back to the previous version.

Is it likely to cause problems?
Incoming email will be delayed for up to two hours whilst the upgrade is carried out. No email will be lost and it will all be delivered once the maintenance is complete. During this time you will not be able to access our Webmail service and attempts to collect email using POP3 or IMAP are likely to time-out.

Is there anything else I need to know?
No.

BUMP!

We've also made some slight changes to our approach. We'll not be downgrading the software version any more:

We recently upgraded the software being used by our email storage platform. We've experienced a few problems behind the scenes since carrying out this upgrade so we'll be simulating a platform failure to help with our diagnosis of the problem.

Is there anything else I need to know?
This announcement supercedes the one made yesterday which contains inaccuracies in the description of the work being carried out.
