I see absolutely no reason why a few words of another language should not appear here - it's a perfectly normal form of writing, you see it in literature all the time. be a Latin, Greek, French  phrase etc..

que ce soit

Bleh.  I thought they were on about the jpeg that used to be your signature.

I'll go back to my little hole.

OK - the out-of-sync-guy-falling-on-floor-thingy has gone now.

I shall think of something else to fill this void with at some stage.

I might have fallen for Wikipedia con too, but there is an article pointing out that its latin in style, but its not actually a latin phrase.

Essentially its a morphing of languages which is taken to mean something along the lines of 'don't let them grind you down'

Thomas, my post was somewhat tongue in cheek. But seriously, I presumed the rule was to avoid moderators having to try to translate everything to ensure it was acceptable. Whilst posts, signatures and personal text in French and German say would be soon spotted and reported by someone who knows the language, what if absolute obscenities were posted in some more obscure language. Where you draw the line as to which languages are allowed and which not could become somewhat contentious. To me the answer is keep it simple - English and nothing else.

Well that's fair enough; I understand where you're coming from, and is perhaps something that can be considered in the future should the moderators ever decide to change the rule... I just resented the growing assertion that I was in some way pushing the rules (as they currently stand) because that is not something I would wish to do.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to have an image as a sig so long as it not deemed offensive.  I'd hate new customers to get the impression the foums are dictatorial or oppressive.  Where used to express personality or make a point (campaign), I think they add colour myself.  The days of worrying about bandwidth use (dialup) caused by such things are history now.

IMHO, to allow english and nothing else would be a real shame......we are a bunch of grown-ups with a lively sense of adventure and maturity.
ANY restrictions on language need to be absolutely necessary before imposing them on a multi-cultural society.

Rather than "keep it simple" let's be less restrictive and more open to lively conversations with the vitality and energy of a grown-up society.

Otherwise, we slip into apathy.

Is there a suggestion here that we must all become multi-lingual.
Speaking personally if there is a thread entirely in German for example I might have found it interesting and useful....if only I had taken German at school.

I can speak a little Swahili but I wouldn't expect to post in Swahili and have everyone understand it.
