The Siemens Gigaset Information and Support Thread

Thanks Ian, I've fired off a question to them.

I got a quick reply from Siemens but they haven't actually answered my question!

Question - "Currently the web configuration screens do not work with Internet Explorer 8. Please could you let me know if you have any plans to fix this?"

Answer - "Regarding your issue, we apologize for the inconvenience, and we ask you to please use IE7 or Mozila Firefox to access the web configuration of the telephone."

They've given me a number to ring (0845 367 0812) so I'll try that and see if I can get a better answer.

After replying to their e-mail I've got a further response from Gigaset Support.

"... at this moment we have no further informations regarding when the compatibility issue between our web interfaces and IE8 will be solved. However, we can assure you that this will be dealt with in a timely fashion. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience."

That sounds like a NO then Bob.

But surely they have to fix it soon. I would think that IE8 penetration must be pretty high now that Microsoft are pushing it our automatically to all PCs.

Shortly after downloading IE8, I noticed the problems and quickly reverted to IE7. Google's Chrome worked fine, until v2 arrived; it does work, but I have to "refresh" pages at least once, to see all the text and options together.

I wonder if I contacted Siemens, writing in German, if I'd get a better response? Probably nein, given my dealings earlier in this thread...

I've just discovered something that may be of interest to others ...

We've just had a major Broadband outage (some sort of problem at the exchange). During the outage I left my router and Gigaset base station switched on. When the Broadband came back, the router automatically re-established a connection but I couldn't get my Gigaset to re-register. The simple solution was to reboot the base station.

So it seems that if you loose your Broadband, the Gigaset won't re-register without a reboot.

@bob,
Sorry to inform you but mine re-registers fine automatically. Both the router and C475 have been on since 20/06 ( when I came back from hols ), looking at my router logs the BB dropped twice on 04/07 and once on 05/07 ( which is odd because its normally rock solid!! ) , the C475 must have re-registered ok because I used it on Wed to make a call. Just checked on the C475 web interface and its showing registered.
Ok, I've checked my router logs and all of my BB drops were pretty short-lived, about 20 secs max, maybe the Gigaset gets upset if the BB is out fro a long time. In my case it probably wouldn't have been down long enough for it to notice but if its down for > than the registration interval ( 1 hr ? ) then maybe it gets upset when it can't re-register...

Hi Ian, I wonder if it is something to do with the type or length of the outage.

Thinking back, I've had the occasional disconnection as well (usually when PlusNet are re-balancing their network) but I've not had to re-boot the Gigaset base station before.

This was a complete loss of connectivity for about 4 hours so maybe that explains it.

The other thing I noticed by the way was that it didn't fail over to making PSTN calls despite having "automatic fallback to fixed line" enabled.

That's not so good!
IIRC that's a feature added in the latest firmware. I'll have to try it sometime.

My handset was prompting me with a new firmware update this morning. I've not downloaded it yet but have found the following:

Gigaset A580 IP Firmware update 07/2009
Download: 02191

New features:

Access online information via your handset (go to menu "Info Center"*) such as:
- News: Stay informed with current RSS news feeds.
- Weather: Find out the weather in up to 250,000 locations around the globe.
- My eBay: Monitor the items of your personal eBay account.
- Encyclopedia: Get quick access to Wikipedia.
- Translator: Look up instant translations.
- Unit Converter: Convert a required amount.
- Horoscope: Access your zodiac sign report.
- Biorhythm: Monitor the state of your biological cycles.
- My Applications: Add info services you developed yourself.
The phone's connection assistant first asks for an auto-configuration code. If your IP provider supports "automatic configuration", you will receive the auto-configuration code from your provider. This code enables the automatic configuration of your VoIP account.

Improvements:

Web Configurator: Support of Internet Explorer 8.0 und Firefox improved.
Infoscreensaver: German umlauts are now displayed correctly.
DNS Name for AVM SIP registrar ("fritz.box") will be resolved from now on.
The preconfigured area code is no longer dialled for VoIP network mailbox and fixed line calls.
Incoming VoIP calls stored in the AM list are no longer stored in the missed calls list.

It includes support  for IE8 - hurrah !

Wonder what that means ?

I'll go and look if there's an update for the C475... Yep, same firmware just released for the C475/S685 .
Well spotted Bob, are you going to be the brave one and try it ?

Some comments from another forum

Was Siemens und Software angeht bin ich sowieso ein gebranntes Kind.
Positiv:
- das Webfrontend is schneller
Negativ:
Fortsetzung folgt...

Popel
Tried a pass through google translate but it didnt really add much, I guess the major one is that the 'Web frontend is faster'...

Downloaded the upgrade at dawn, checked the phone still worked and went to work myself.

This evening, the interface is certainly faster (IE7 and Google Chrome v2), but the screen of my handsets are blank, where the weather report, or clock, ought to be displayed. Attempting to log into the Info Services centre produces 'Error 404' - not available. Will now upgrade to IE8 and try.

@johpal,
You'll be happy to know that's not a firmware upgrade issue. Tried to login to InfoServices form my 'non-updated' C475 and get exactly the same!!!
