Nope.  Definitely not.

Hi everyone

As we know people with long lines will suffer signal loss which means higher attenuation hence lower connection rates and speed.

I have looked at various router stats and have discovered that the power of the signal is higher for those with a lower attenuation and in most cases 0.0Dbm for those with high attenuation.

I'm not sure if this is the power pumped out by the DSLAM or the power received by the router.

I realise that increasing the power of the ADSL signal might cause interference on neighbouring lines but increasing the power slightly say 5 db surely wouldn't do any harm. (just a thought)

5dBm represents a factor of more than 3 so is not "slight". I think the maximum power possible is around 19dBm, so I assume the power for anyone at that level already can't be increased (the 0.0 points you mentioned?).

On the other hand for those below the maximum the power can be increased a little, which presumably goes into raising signal content to higher frequencies - which translates into better sync speeds.

Is the Current Line Speed shown on the Member Centre applicable with 21CN?

I ask because mine is showing at 3500 and recently download speeds tests appear to be clamped below 3000 (typically 2800) even though sync is 4384 with interleaving. I have tried at all times of day and evening with no difference.

@gm4jjj

I think profiling on 21CN has to be set manually

BT speed test will indicate the current profile

I have never been able to get BT speed test to work since 21CN Undecided

Hi gm4jjj,

Have you tried in both Internet Explorer and Firefox?

If you can't, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I had only tried Safari, but just tried Firefox and still get: " The system is currently busy. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider. "

Right, thanks.

I'll try and find out your profile in a bit.

I need to get access to a piece of BT software first.  (Not as easy as it sounds)

Your line is currently profiled at 3500Kbps.

Which is mirrored on our network.

Thanks James, I wonder why in the last week or so the download speed has reduced from about 3250 to 2880?

Edit: Noted this evening after a reboot of my router that download now back to 3250 again.

Re: output power

In regard to an earlier question I raised here earlier my download power is zero  I think it should be higher
is there a fault somewhere?

Downstream stats
Noise Margin:     4.9   dB
Connection Rate:  9525  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 41.0  dB
Power: 0.0  dBm
Max Rate:         10628  Kbps

Upstream stats
Noise Margin:     6.1  dB
Connection Rate:  1057   Kbps
Line Attenuation: 22.4  dB
Power:            13.1  dBm
Max Rate:         1068  Kbps

I think not.  Cheesy
Strictly speaking a dB figure is a measure of the ratio of two numbers.
E.g. Such as signal/noise ratio

Sometimes a standard figure for one quantity is assumed; this allows you to quote the performance of your hardware in relation to some standard.
When this is done the measure is often quoted as dBm
Note the Upstream power is quoted as 13.1dBm - which means 13.1dB above some reference value.

You can't do this for downstream (because there is no standard transmit power).
Hence 0.0 is shown - it's not applicable really.
My router also shows virtually identical figures (0.0 and 13.0).

ok...

If what you say is true then it's going to be an issue.

If someone is having constant disconnections etc.
and the output power is 0.0Dbm and someone with similar stats has a higher Ddm has no issues.
then it would cause frustration.

There must be a standard for output power surely!!

I think the downstream power is probably just over 19.2dBm, the maximum available value. The router simply reports this as 0.0dBm -- not an indication of a fault. The reference unit is the milliwatt. 19.2dBm represents 83.2mW.

I think profiling on 21CN has to be set manually

Yep, currently very manual by me. Automation is coming very soon though thankfully.
