Connection Issues

« on 05/10/2009, 22:46 »
Hi, I have been upgraded apparently, although I haven't noticed any performance increase, currently my downloads peak at about 170KB/s which is no improvement, what I have noticed changed is that my router loses connection from the ADSL a couple of times a day and needs to be restarted. The router is a bog standard Netgear DG834GT, with the latest firmware but something is wrong.  Could this be the router?  Has anyone any experience with a router that likes plus.net?  Would changing provider make any difference or is the problem within BT's infrastructure in my exchange?  Has anyone suffered similar problems and found a solution?

Thanks

Alec

Hi,

I'm using the DG834GT with the DGTeam Firmware (V1.02.16 - DGTeam Rev. 0848).  I won't say I haven't had any problems, but things seem to be settling down now (been migrated approx 2 weeks). Any disconnects I had, then the router would always reconnect automatically (make sure the option is check within the router).

I was tempted to reboot the router alot in the early days to establish hight sync speeds, but this worked against me as training program thought I had issues and therefore automatically kept on reducing my line speed. Decided to leave alone and slowly my sync speeds have increased along with my 'profile' Currently syncing at 14860 (down) and 954 (up)

Hi Alec,

Just like with the IPStream Max service (the upto 8Mbps malarkey), there's a ten day stability period on ADSL2+.

It's not unheard of for there to be a couple of disconnections during this time, so initially I'd say to just give it a while and see if it stabilises itself.

Worth making sure that your router is connecting directly into your master socket via a filter and that all of your telephony devices are filtered.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the download speeds still have the same expected maximums on them whether you are on up to 8Mb or up to 20Mb. Have a look here for the account you're on.

So...

Jameseh, it sounds like if I am still having frequent daily disconnections after 2 months then the issue is not the line?   What router do you reccommend?

Chris, are you publicly saying that there are no maximum speed improvements to the ADSL2+ service due to packet shaping?  The page you sent me to shows bandwidth caps for different types of packets and no service has 'line speed' unless I pay for the pro service. So I guess it is pointless unless I am a pro customer?

No - What Chris is saying is that the rate limits that we have in place for things like P2P are the same regardless of whether you are on ADSL or ADSL2+.

We've seen a few complaints with the Netgear routers, but not specifically for dropping connections.  Before you look at replacing the router, I'd look at trying a new filter and connecting directly into your master socket, or better still, the test socket behind the master faceplate.

Friday evening I had no service for about 45mins where my Router could not get an IP address at all even though I rebooted it, it was then OK again until last night (Sunday).  It seems to me that the whole service is becoming more and more flakey, I am having similar issues at least every two days.   Is this PlusNet's service failing me or is it BT?  If this continues I'll have to change to another ISP which is a shame because until this summer I had had great service from you guys.

It probably points towards an issue on BT equipment, which you'll use on other non-LLU ISPs.

Keep an eye on things for me and I can raise with BT if it becomes a problem.
