This is all great news, but I dont think you can turn the CCGI off as early as April.

If the old CCGI-platform is switched off in April my charity webpage will go down with the whole ship. It runs on Typo3, but on an old version for php4. So an upgrade would be brilliant - with lots of work.

The main question for me would be: are symlinks then enabled on the new platform?

The new PAYH server has cgi-bin and httpdocs folders on the same webspace which seems to meet the requirement you describe. Why not sign up for a preview account at http://trials.plus.net and give it a try?

David

Having only just started developing the site I am hosting on PlusNet in the lastmonth, I am keen to keep up to date with all the developments re the CGI space changes.

If I was to sign up for a 'preview account' would that account then be the one that goes live, or would I then have to setup a new account once everything has changed over?

The site http://trials.plus.net does not reference the PAYH trial.
Has this trial ended?

I think the posts in the Benefits of PAYH/Plesk over Plusnet standard web server topic provide answers to the questions asked in the previous two replies.

Thanks for your quick reply.
The system seems to be a bit of a shambles at the moment, but as I understand it, the trial has ended and the free residential PAYH category no longer exists.

That's my understanding of the position.

I run a small website on behalf of a charity and want to switch to a site that they can self manage (content management system). Most solutions available on the net require php5. I've read the various discussions on PN Community about the trial of Plesk, PHP5 access to PAYH, customers paying or not, what's available and what will be available free. It appears PN intend to offer php5 free for PN customers but not when it will be made available. Can someone please confirm the time scale? The broadband subscription the charity has is up for renewal and I need to know whether php5 will be available free to existing customers in the near future or whether they switch to another ISP who does offer php5 as part of their included hosting.
Thanks

I'd switch or go to a separate dedicated hosting package.

12/18 month broadband contracts have been abolished - all Plusnet residential contracts (including for existing users) are now 10 days (however deferred charges such as activation or hardware may have to be paid if you leave within a year)

I don't often frequent these forums (fora?) and was horrified I am losing my frontpage support, even worse the address.
If all my addresses I give out to people, of pages within my frontpage site are going, then I will doubtless leave plusnet, I can do better elsewhere. It's really the only reason I stay.

A generalised redirect would be not good

I want my addresses to stay valid. Full stop.
Or I go

End of story

And I 've been with plusnet some time

I have the same issues that you have.

Me and my friends are only with PlusNet because of the website hosting. We have been long time customers (8+ years) and use Frontpage because it was easier to use when it first came out in the early days of website designing.

Guys, Microsoft ended support for Frontpage back in 2006 and they haven't released any updated Frontpage server extensions since 2002.

It was absolutely inevitable that a time would come whereby the support of a legacy product like FrontPage would start causing problems for us when it came to updating server software and protecting against security vulnerabilities.

We will try and protect the fp.username sub-domain but I can't promise anything at this stage I'm afraid, I'll get back to you as soon as I know more...

I know the situation isn't ideal but it's largely out of our control and if you were to leave your website URL would change anyway! Huh?

frontpage just shouldn't be used, you will get cleaner code for your sites using dreamweaver, Frontpage can make a right mess of your coding.

@steed: If you are only with PN for their webhosting, why dont you go to a company that provides web hosting as their main service? No offence to PlusNet, but, PN is an ISP, which they are very good at delivering (in my experience), the web hosting they provide, seems like a "bonus" feature, a free gift, if you will, IMO. Personally, I would rather stick with an ISP because the are delivering a good ISP service, not because of their web hosting.

If your sites are small, there are plenty of Web Hosting companies that will be able to host your site at a really cheap price (just make sure you do a google background check on them though), and as for addresses, I'm assuming you are talking about URLs (yourdomain.co.uk), these can be registered cheap through 123-reg or Just the Name and you own the name until you decide to give it up or stop renewing the domain, so you can move your site from web host to web host if necessary and not worry about the domain as all you need to do is make sure the domain name is pointing to the correct location (usually your web host will take care of this)
