Peter J,
I have found some bits that you might like to look at please (??).
Maybe you will have the chance to read them.
They are contained in two topics (there are others that I haven't found yet),
1. Suggestions for additional policy and procedure documents; started by spraxyt
see reply 20 on Sept. 20th '07 and so on.
2. What is the community; started by mandy
see reply 8 and so on to your own at reply 23.
regards,
Bob
PS I have just read your latest post and I understand what you say, but I would like to emphasise comments made in the topics I suggest, especially those of Neil Armstrong re Help Assistant.
I may not be a so much a newcomer but I am still a novice, (I became a customer of PlusNet in June 2004 with my first computer), partly because of a lack of an enlightening welcome pack and also because of difficulties in navigating a website that I find confusing. But you are going to fix that aren't you.

Thanks for all your help so far!

This glossary is intended to be integrated to the PlusNet portal, and hence won't be covering the forums with forum-based abbreviations such as 'LOL' or 'afaik' as PJ said. This is something that might be worked on at a later date but unfortunately is not covered within the scope of this project. However, I have taken on-board the recurring point about abbreviations - I'll make sure that all that occur on our portal will be included.

Penny - thanks to your link to the PUG glossary. From a quick look through it seems like the majority of content is a notch above what I'm working on here, however I will look through it in its entirety and make sure that I include anything that will help.

Please keep your suggestions coming about any specific terms to include - I'll post an updated list as soon as it's compiled in approximately one week.

Perhaps people in the forums could be encouraged to use [acronym=Full meaning]XXX[/acronym] more often.

HTH

(Try hovering the mouse over the abbreviation)

Edit: Of course a little sense would be required so people would have to put things like LMAO

@ jelv

I would have thought that doing it that way, would take more time, also,  ergonomically, it would be inefficient, than just typing out the full words anyway.  Or perhaps, the techie and texty type people think it shows a certain amount of "education" to put in the acronyms anyway, and so long as it looks "clever" it is O.K.   I did try to hover my mouse over the HTH but not being that well educated in the "nuances" of the text and computer world, it would never occur to me to do that, to find out WTH it meant. consequently, the HTH would mean nothing, and never would I find out, except by accident, or querying it  and then get told to go and hover your mouse over it, and you`ll find out.  Lips Sealed Undecided

The dotted underline is frequently used to indicate items that can be hovered over.

They crop up quite often in the Community blog posts - e.g. CSC, EOD, QA appear in the last couple of End of Day posts.

Edit: http://community.plus.net.../02/end-of-day-2nd-april/ has all three and finishes with another.

Ah yes, it's great isn't it that little 'hover over' plugin. But I think what is being referred to here is that it doesn't work here in the forums.  It only works in the Wordpress-driven areas of the frontpage and the blogs.  (Wordpress BTW (by the way) is the software that we use to run the Community Site (you'll notice a link to Wordpress on the foot of the page).  The forums use SMF; you'll find a link to their website at the foot of this page) if you're interested.

HTH (hope that helps).

It's not that they don't work on here, it's just that it's a PITA to set them up as you post. I wonder if the lads can think of a way to make it easier?

How about this --- there is a 'swear' filter in operation.
Why can't we have an 'initials' filter as well.

That has actually been talked about with Colin especially.

There would be a concern that it might end up confusing itself when the letters are contained within normal words.

Because its a rubbish idea IMO (In a Moderators Opinion) Grin

How would an 'initials' filter know what particular acronym is?

It can't assess the context of the inclusion of an acronym, so would incorrectly alter stuff regularly.

I believe the inhabitants of Scunthorpe experienced problems with a swear filter... (apocryphally)  Smiley
