Postini Feedback / Manage My Mail Improvements

Things go wrong, nothing is ever pefect. Especially when the entire exim config has been changed, its very hard to test every single scenario and every single type of email.

Anyway, the problem you are seeing is that email has been spoofed and come from a .plus.com address. We had originally whitelisted all plusnet domains (which was my fault, and if had read the entire thread i have apologised for this mistake and it has been rectified). .
OK but Carol Axe didn't send customers a news email warning us of this change happening and to look out for problems.  The first I knew there was a problem was when I began to drown in spam.  And it wouldn't just be me but most of your customers who are heavily spam afflicted and spoofing afflicted.

And to add insult to injury someone at Plusnet had the bright (not) idea of closing the long running thread discussing your spam beta testing and starting an altogether new one.  This directly ensured I and all the other participants in that thread got no update emails indicating that something was afoot on the Plusnet spam filtering arrangements front.

I fully accept that those of you individually involved at the middle level are trying your very best but people like Neil Armstrong (assuming he is still with you) are not doing their job properly by managing things in an orderly way at a strategic level so that basic errors of this kind are not made.  At the moment two many people at Plusnet can change major things in your email system that can then have a massively detrimental impact on the service.

Dont blacklist your own email address just yet, i have updated your settings which should have removed the whitelisting of plus.com domains. All emails should now be scanned for spam unless you have set them to be approved senders. Try that, if you continue to get spam through from *.plus.com domains gimme a shout.
OK thanks Dan for sorting this out and for your commitment in looking in to it at this late hour of the day.  However I hope the blanket whitelisting of Plusnet domains is now being eradicated for all your customers before they all become swamped with spam.

Service status postings have been made, to ensure customers were aware that this was going to be rolled, and im pretty sure we've been talking about this for ages on the forums that we were going to be changing the spam tab on the portal.

Its not the fact that too many people can do major changes, its the fact that in the agile development we do we need to get things done fast as you the customer was requesting these improvements. Would you rather of waited months on end whilst we tested every single thing possible? Or have a few spam emails delivered to your inbox on one day of roll and we fix it as soon as possible... even if most of us have only had a few hours sleep Wink

Now i undestand in some industries mistakes cant be made, i wouldn't like surgeon cutting without being tested he can do the job for example Wink But we're talking about emails here, its not a life or death situation. Smiley

But as i said previously, your issue has now been resolved, and if its not then shout up, i'll be more than willing to get it sorted for you. Thats what were here for.

Yep, course, i'll be bringing this up tomorrow as i thought this would have been cleaned up as part of the P1 raised.

Grrrrrrrrrrr.  Strange and unexplained lack of mail/spam problem solved it would appear.

Why have I received no spam/mail since this morning ? ... because the default options for the shiny new settings say don't deliver it !

It's apparently being tagged -spam- and sent to my (non-existent because I don't have one and I have no intention of having one) spam folder on webmail.

How the &^"£*% do I revert all this back to just as it was before it was all changed for me ?  Does deliver to "inbox" mean another webmail folder or what ? All I want is mail delivered to me via pop3 in the usual way without any -spam- tagging and without any virus checking at all just as it has been for more than 10 years up until this morning.  If it's addressed to a mbox then it goes there and if not then it goes to the catch all.  Nice and simple ... or at least it was before this morning Sad  And how exactly do I get all the mail that is now presumably lurking in my non-existent spam folder back to my network via pop3 ?

The previous spam tagging "off" and virus checking "off" options meant I required just that - it didn't mean tweak them willy-nilly because you thought it was a good idea.  Why on earth didn't the new options take an appropriate setting based on the previous ones  Roll Eyes

Mike, I suspect the Spam folder will have been created, if so you'll just need to subscribe to it in webmail or via a IMAP client.

Excepting for that I ONLY use pop3.  I don't use webmail or IMAP or any other means of accessing my mail whatsoever, I never have and I don't have anything that can do IMAP either.

Also Mike, it would appear you have turned spam filtering off.

We did migrate all customers across with their current settings in place, if however between the time we were migrating accounts and rollout completion, you changed your settings it wouldn't have picked up your account because you had gone in and already updated your spam settings.

No I most certainly didn't.  Perhaps Postini flagged it as Spam along with the recent email from my mother that they also threw in to my online IMAP folder tagged as Spam.

Receipt of update post emails for the Community forums has always been very erratic and anyhow note that Community members are not subscribed to updates as standard when they join the Community along with the bizarre and unique to Plusnet feature of not automatically going back to the thread and page you have just posted in after you make a post unles you specifically enable that option.  Instead Plusnet by default throws you out to the Community home page after posting in a thread.  Can't think of any other forum on the internet that does this and for good reason (its plain daft as the default option).

I had a Bookmark for the previous thread and I would look up if there were any problems with email.  As to the Service Status page I generally find those pages don't get updated till several hours after a problem has already been in effect.

If so you should have received http://usertools.plus.net...us/archive/1207151895.htm

Return to home is the SMF default.

You need to be ABSOLUTELY certain you are looking at the right A/C before saying any of that,  I have several A/Cs, some opted on to postini, some on postini by default and one not on postini at all.

ALL of the A/Cs using postini had spam and virus filtering turned "off " , in fact all my A/Cs do - I don't trust ANYONE to manage my e-mail except me !  I have NEVER EVER EVER used any of the filtering of any kind on any of my A/Cs at any time other than any mandatory filtering on receipt that may have been present.   I have never used webmail.  I have never used IMAP. Plain and simple no problems at all pop3 with no messing around by PN.

However, I have just looked at the settings for one of my F9 A/Cs and it now says filtering "on", Virus checking "on", tag with -spam-, deliver to webmail folder etc.  which couldn't be further away from my existing settings at the time of this change if you tried.  Why on earth were the settings not migrated across sensibly for god sake.

But what's important is how do I get it back to how it was before and rescue all today's mail by pop3 ?

Dan,

You obviously haven't been looking at the Postini posts on these forums or the PUG forums since January - if you had you would have been well aware of the situation with Mike. He has been doing some excellent work on monitoring the performance of Postini using accounts both on and off Postini.

Thats good, but i only assumed the account was the one the forum username was linked too because nothing else was specified. But as explained before in this thread, all settings have been migrated and corrected, we initally did have a problem where accounts defaults back to deliver to spam folder, but was later fixed.

Login using IMAP, drag and drop all spam emails in your spam folder to your inbox. Then you can download using POP3.
