Nah, the sorting problem's been going on for about a week now IIRC.

I've just spoken to Bob about this and he's confirmed that it's a problem, we'll get it raised and pushed through to Postini. One of us will update you when we have more info.

I'm wondering if the sorting problem is anything to do with some recent maintenance work Postini have carried out on their systems.

We'll get a case raised with them and see if they can shed any light on the situation.

Release 6.15: Upcoming Security & Archiving Features

In this release:

    * Partner Order Form: Systems Unavailable July 11 - July 13
    * Content Policy Management
    * Threat Protection: Early Detection for Viruses
    * Best Practices: NDR Trends and Directory Sync Server Edition

Target Release Schedule:

    * System 8: Beginning on Thursday, July 10
    * All other systems: Beginning the week of July 14

Note: Some Release 6.15 features will be automatically enabled for customers through the end of July.

Please see the Release Notes for the latest schedule information, more detailed descriptions, and a list of fixed issues. The Release Notes are available in the Support Portal and Google Help Center.

Partner Order Form: Systems Unavailable July 11-13

We are performing maintenance events on our provisioning and ordering systems on

7:00 PM (PDT) Friday , July 11 to 11:00 PM (PDT) Sunday, July 13

During this maintenance period:

    * The Partner order form, order status, and activation wizard will be unavailable.
    * Provisioning of accounts and usage reports will be delayed until the completion of the maintenance event.

This maintenance does not impact the availability of the Postini/Google services. Your email flow, security, and protection continue as normal.

Content Policy Management

For Postini Enterprise Edition, Google Message Security, and Google Message Discovery

Release 6.15 expands the Content Manager feature set and adds controls to the message workflow:

    * Administrators can set up both routing disposition (such as "bypass junk filters" or "bounce") and quarantine options. This allows administrators to easily copy messages to other designated users.
    * Administrators can determine the priority order for filters, which is useful for messages that may trigger multiple filters.
    * For finer granularity, new filter types include "matches any word in" (for word lists), "does not match regex" and "is empty".
    * Interface improvements based on customer feedback include a new regex tester, a usage bar that indicates the remaining space for content filters, and an option to print the list of filters.

Threat Protection: Early Detection of Viruses

For Postini Enterprise and Service Provider Editions, Google Message Filtering, Message Security, Message Discovery

This release introduces Early Detection threat protection against zero hour viruses. With Early Detection, incoming messages that contain suspicious content are temporarily quarantined for deeper analysis and rescanned by the service's antivirus engines with updated signatures. Early Detection automatically captures and provides additional scanning for:

    * Messages with executable file attachments (for example, .exe, .vbs, and .cmd files). These file types typically serve as vectors for viruses.
    * Messages that trigger the advanced anti-virus heuristics filter.

If Early Detection determines that the message is uninfected, it's automatically released and delivered as normal to the user. In observations in the threat environment, we found that the new early detection feature has successfully identified and blocked zero-hour viruses in the wild.

This feature will be rolled out shortly after the release. The configuration information will be made available in the Release Notes.

Message Archiving: New Search and Export Features

For Postini Message Archiving, Message Discovery

Release 6.15 includes additions to Message Archive functionality and security:

    * Archive Search Restriction: Control access to archived data by investigators and users. Search administrators can configure investigators to search the archives of specified users.
    * Archive investigators can now export and download investigations securely via secure FTP.
    * Message Archiving Reports: To help provide visibility into archive mail flow, the Reports tab now includes graphs to track journaling errors and messages archived for non-registered users.

Best Practices: NDR Trends and Directory Sync

NDR Trends: We've observed an end to the previous NDR storm, but continue to see some spammers falsifying the "From" address of their spam messages, resulting in some users receiving numbers of bounce messages for messages they didn't send. The Technical Bulletin gives an overview of NDRs and shows you additional tools and best practices to protect against NDR spam.

Directory Sync Server Edition: Looking for easier user management? The Directory Sync Server Edition utility synchronizes the user data in your LDAP server with your message security service. Directory Sync Server Edition performs a push one-way synchronization, unlike the current Directory Sync Hosted Edition feature, which pulls data from your LDAP server. See the system requirements and download the utility at the Directory Sync Server Edition site.

Not impressed that it's taken the best part of a week from this first being reported to be talking about raising this with Postini!

We raised this with Postini on the 23rd.

Regarding the column sorting issue, Postini have since got back to us to advise:

Quote
I would like to confirm that this is a bug in our product (Bug #1223909) affecting some of our systems. We appreciate your help in bringing this to our attention. The issue is scheduled to be fixed in the next release (6.15) which will be released shortly.

As per my post here I thought this release was already live. Seems like it's been delayed a little though:

Unlikely to be happening,

Problem 50966 Customers not receiving daily quarantine summary - Fixed, Due to the architecture of our current anti-spam platform, it has emerged that the way the system is set up prevents us from being able to send out Quarantine Summary reports. This feature has not worked properly since it was introduced so to avoid any further confusion it has been removed from the Manage My Mail tool in the Member Centre. This will allow us more time to explore the feasibility of redesigning the system to accommodate such functionality.

I'm pleased to see that sorting of our Quarantine boxes by column header issue was finally resolved but am very disappointed that Postini took so long to fix this.  Surely as this was a major removal of essential functionality to manage our Qurantine boxes Postini could have just have rolled back to an earlier version of their software that did not have the bug straight away while they were then having the problem in the new software version fixed?

However coming back to Quarantine more generally there are several long running significant problems that still need to be addressed to make it work satsifactorily as an interface for most end users.

1. Passwords for Quarantine Box Cannot Be Changed

For Security reasons I have recently changed the passwords on my Plusnet email accounts to ones that also involve the use of numbers.  However I find this is not possible for my Postini Quarantine box where the password is frozen at the one given to it by Plusnet when my Quarantine box was set up and the subsequent password change I have made with Plusnet for my mailbox has not been given to Postini by Plusnet.  Equally there is no user control panel for Postini Quarantine to manage this password functionality directly with Postini.

2. User Variable Settings for Show Number of Messages Per Page and Time Period From Which Messages Can Be Shown Cannot Be Set and "Last 3 days" and "25 per page" defaults are not what most end users want

It find it very unhelpful indeed that if there is to be a system default for the period to "Show" messages from that Postini chooses "3 days" instead of "All" by default.  This is because I am quite sure that most users periodically review their spam folder and consign all current spam messages in it to Trash while delivering any non spam messages to their Plusnet email account before this.  I cannot actually imagine any likely circumstances where most users only want to look at spam messages Quarantined from only the last 3 days or Last Week.  Either this filter should be removed altogether (so all Quarantined messages are always shown) or the default should be "All" as that is the time period most end users will want to use.

Similarly if there is to be a limit on the number of messages shown per page then I would suggest that most of us would find 250 per page a more helpful default than the current 25 per page and again the default for this does not seem to be variable by the end user.   For instance I normally sort all my messages at 250 per page by the From and then the Subject fields to spot any non spam messages being caught in Quarantine but when I have more than 250 messages this does not work properly since when I change the sort method from the "From" to the "Subject" field a different 250 messages are then being shown.  This problem would not occur if I could show all Quarantined messages at once on one screen.

I would therefore like the Show function to have an All Messages option and also the default for this field to be definable by the individual Quarantine user in their own control panel.  in the interim the default for this field should certainly be 250 per page not 25 per page as it currently appears to be.

I would note that the Show Per Page and Show Time Period settings I have last used sometimes seem to be remembered when I log back in to Postini Quarantine the next time but in the main they are not.  I don't know if this has anything to do with whether I have cleared out my cookies and internet cache in the intervening period?

3. Fault with Deliver Selected Not Being Able to Handle More Than Two Messages?

After coming back from a week's holiday and finding 4 non spam messages in a total of over 500 Quarantined messages  I tried to use Deliver Selected to deliver these four messages that were also tagged but when I clicked Deliver Selected only two of these messages were shown as delivered in the resulting output screen.  Yet when I clicked on the Delivered tab in Quarantine all four of the messages I had selected for delivery were shown but when I then downloaded email to Thunderbird via Pop only two of these four messages were received in my Inbox.  So there also appears to have been a fault introduced with Deliver Selected by the latest version of the Postini software.

4. Fault with Postini letting through email for Catch All email address variants for which no mailboxes, redirects or Aliases are In Effect

Finally I should also remind Plusnet of the problem with emails in our Postini Quarantine folders operating on a Catch All basis even though we may have Catch All de-activated in our individual email account user profiles.  This means that the amount of mail held in Postini Quarantine is far larger than it needs to be as these Catch All emails could be edge filtered or otherwise blocked if Plusnet provide the relevant information to Postini to not allow through mail to these Catch All email variants not specifically set up as mailboxes, aliases or redirects by the Plusnet customer.

Summary

I feel sure most of the above points are also relevant to other regular users of Postini Quarantine and so would be grateful to hear from any other Community members who may agree with my above points.

I look forward to receiving the response of Bob and/or other members of the team at Plusnet in due course.

Finally I should note that the "Notify of Replies" option for this Community forum is still not working properly and it seems to be a one time only option after which I have to visit the forum again manually to see any other update messages in this thread.  Note this is not becuase I have failed to visit the forum after receiving the latest post update message.   I have always visited the forum again after receiving this last Update message.
