The recent photo competition shows approval of a practice  contrary to the urgent need to reduce energy-waste and slow down global warming - I quote: -

"We’d like to see photos of ‘well decorated’ Christmas houses – The ones with a 6ft Santa on the roof or elves climbing up the walls and 1000s of brightly coloured lights!"

How about this: -
"At this time of year there must be thousands of clowns clambering about on cold roofs risking fractures and electrocutions in order to demonstrate their superior powers of vulgar display."

I think the amount of electricity used in charging a digital camera and subsequent transmission of a few pictures via digital means cannot be very great.
The interception of a few photons has no effect on the wastage of electricity by Santa/Elf owner. Of course if said owner should fall and fracture any limbs, then no-one will be pressing the "on" switch and sadly no photo will appear.

Nice to see folks keeping the Christmas spirit alive.
