Chris,
Thanks old fellow, you have done well.
The only query I am stuck with is whether future 'trials' will be better conducted, that remains to be seen.

If we do more trials we can only learn from those performed previously and therefore conduct them in an improved manner.

Bob, there might be one more thing....  I strongly suggest you switch on spam protection in your Manage My Mail, if you haven't already.  Most spam is now being blocked anyway, but you can improve matters by having PlusNet dispose of more of it.

If it's not like teaching my grandma to suck eggs Smiley, you can get to the right place from the Members Centre -- choose Email Settings from the menu on the left, then the Manage My Mail icon, then the Spam tab. I find this is a good page for explaining what is going on!

If you don't use Webmail and don't want tagged [-SPAM-] sent to a spam folder there, you can opt to have it delivered and use a Message Rule in your email program to deal with it.  You will need to look at the subject lines before finally deleting [-SPAM-] because a few are likely to be genuine emails wrongly identified.

I hope you don't think I'm interfering too much, but I can't help thinking you'd be better off with your spam protection switched on.

Thanks ChrisL
I am very happy to get any suggestions.
I am only getting an occasional spam email, perhaps one a day. When they arrive my ZoneAlarm spam filter detects them well. I previously blackholed some compromised addresses, which removed the deluge which ensued in the past few months.
My query was simply to find out what was supposed to happen and when.
With your help I was able to sort out my understanding of matters a lot better.
regards,
Bob

You seem to be better sorted than I am!  I have Zone Alarm (free), which has virus protection but not, as far as I can see, spam filtering. Am I missing something obvious? Where do you go in ZA to handle spam?

ChrisL,
I use Zone Alarm Security Suite which is not free.
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=db_trial
This link will take you to the website and if you want you can go from there.
You will see that you can have a free trial for, I beleive 15 days.
If you do try this, when you install the suite, you are asked questions such as your experience etc.
Thus the programmes are set to defaults to match your 'requirements'. There is also a learning period in which your use changes the default settings. There is a tutorial which tells you all about it. When you start to use the Suite there are pop-ups asking if you want to give temporary or permanent access to the internet. It sounds complex but you may find you settle into it fairly well.
You can set automatic updates of spyware and viruses, as well as regular scans for both.
There is also a means of you being able to report spam. You can also 'unjunk' emails if the filter overdoes the severity of selection. Also there are boxes for phishing detection and reporting and also a box for dumping 'challenges'. The retention of emails in the spam boxes is variable as you wish. Additionally you can manually set your preferences to deal with variations of spam, eg sexual content and so on.
There is also a facility which provides you with a graphical record of spam received and what sort.
Pause for breath; I sound like a salesman don't I ?
Followed by a declaration of no connection or financial interest.
Seriously, you may find it worth a try.

How do I go about getting forum post update emails from the www.saynoto0870.com discussion forum white listed so that Postini stops incorrectly classifying them as Spam.  Strangely enough a visit to www.postini.co.uk/about_postini/contact.php shows that Postini uses an ordinary geographic London 020 number and not a ripoff 0870 phone number for Europe wide contact so I am none the wiser as to why they should be misclassifying forum post update emails from this forum as being Spam.

I tried clicking the Not Spam button against these items ticked in my Plusnet Spam webmail folder but I highly doubt that will do the trick.

Bob and co do you have a way to get an email address whitelisted manually?  And what is the Postini excuse for blacklisting as Spam all update emails from this perfectly laudable web discussion forum in the first place?

Do you think that it might have take offence to the 'all capitals' subject line with the word 'clearance' in it?

It seems that Postini may not be the saviour that everyone was hoping for....

@Capvermell

I'll see what I can do about that site, whitelisting and blacklisting will be much easier once the portal controls are available to do this on a per user basis.

@pierre_pierre

I've passed the headers upstairs to see why one isn't marked and one is marked as [-SPAM-].

Certainly Postini are not a complete saviour judging from the number of rogue Google search emails they were failing to completely edge filter (as they obviously should be doing as a supposed market leader in spam filtering).  Yet when was the last time anyone sent you a Google search link in a legitimate email?  Answer basically never - people would only tell you to enter a search for words x and y.

On the other hand the total number of spams reaching my Thunderbird Spam folder in the last 2 weeks is down to one or two per day and my Spam folder on my webmail shows only about 10 spams a day.  This would suggest that Postini are successfully edge filtering a great deal of Spam since I highly doubt the total amount of Spam email being sent is suddenly fallling.

The below email was not classified as Spam 2, Spam 3, Spam 4 or Spam 5 by Plusnet's header adding algorithm.  This despite it being an obvious Google search link Spam that Postini ought to be edge filtering anyway if they weren't so woefully slow to respond to this kind of new spam email threat.

Any suggestions as to why Plusnet did not classify it as being Spam?

I agree that postini should have caught ^^this with BSB. What it did instead was catch it for breach of a Global Rule -- hence X-pstn-xfilter:    y -- but PlusNet are not checking for that header so it didn't get quarantined.

Would tagging mails with that header add to our problem with false positives? I don't think so from what I've seen. Perhaps PN could look at this next time they visit the [-SPAM-] tagging scripts?
