Due out in the first quarter of 2008, Mario Kart could be the biggest game so far on the Wii, particularly in terms of online game play. Need to track this to ensure we have a signature in place for release date (if needed) and to see what impact it has in terms of usage.

I've not got a Wii yet, but Mario Kart is one of the games that would make me buy one. One way of running the wireshark would be to use Internet Connection Sharing on a PC and connect the Wii to the PC rather than the router, I've done that with a couple of pieces of hardware for testing.

I'm happy to do it.

I do have a Wii, and I'm intending on getting Mario Kart.  However, the Wii is wireless by default, (Ethernet costs extra!) so I shall have to figure out some sort of Wii->WAP->Hub->Router->Internet configuration, so I can sniff the traffic passing over the hub section.

When's it released?

Has mario kart wii been added to the list of defined games as i cannot find it in there? If not can this be added asap since this game is really popular and i sometimes have problems with lag and connections in game. I cannot do a Wireshark thing as i cannot connect my wii to my pc, but i have found on tech forums that it uses ports 88 and 3074. I have emailed nintendo for confirmation but am not sure how long it will take for their reply.

Cheers.

Hiya,

We got a copy of this (Plusnet) as soon as it came out to make sure that we were prioritising the traffic accordingly.

I've not seen a single complaint up until now regarding karting.

So does that mean that it is alreay "on the list"? If so can you let me know which ports it uses? Will enabling a static IP and opening those ports help with the lag/disconnections when demand is high?

Not sure about Mario Kart specifically but I know Mario Strikers uses UDP port 22710. Does anybody know if the ports used vary between Wii games? I wonder if Barry's still in a position whereby he can run that Wireshark capture?

When I spoke to Dave yesterday, he believed that the Wii games were being profiled in the same way as XBOX Live, which so far has caused no problems.

Mario Strikers is the only one that we've added a specific signature for.

Yup, I can switch in an old hub and do a promiscuous capture at some point if you like.

However, I don't have Mario Kart just yet. Wink

Have finally got a response from Nintendo as to the ports MK uses so we can get it added to the preferred games list.
Can you please add this to the list or if there is anymore info required let me know, i still get occasional lag even though i'm now on the gamer package so hopefully this will help.
Cheers.

Here is what they said:
Here are the Ports that both the Wii and DS consoles use to connect to the internet…

TCP PORTS:

28910
29900
29901
29920
80
443

Please note that all UDP ports are used

I hope this helps
Kind regards,

James, you think you can add it to the list now, with the info above?
