I'll certainly second that.  Thanks also for the news and pictures.  I was born in Sheffield, though it's 50 years since I lived there.  Still have relatives at Rawmarsh, Rotherham, thankfully just inconvenienced by the problems there.

Moving to Sheffield from Amsterdam to work for a well to do ISP?  All your belongings in some storage lock-up which is possibly under water?  Can't get hold of your letting agent to find out if your new flat is above water level???  Priceless ... for everything else; there's Guinness.

Seriously; hope all is calming down over there.

Hope to see you on Monday!

Rick.

Well no change on the roads today so it seems so I'll be VPNing again. Luckilly I didn't even attempt the drive yesterday as my father in law called me, 2 and a half hours into his attempt to reach Sheffield to let me know it was near impossible.

The police are saying the M1 could be open later today so hopefully the situation is improving and we on the east side of the M1 will be back in the office soon. (Although you can't work in your dressing gown in the office)   Wink

Same here.  Still VPN'd in from Devon.  Didn't think it was a good idea attempting last night.  I'm hoping the extra 24 hours will make a world of difference and I'll be able to set off tonight!  I miss the canteen...! ;-)

I hope all is ok Rick!   I reckon everything should be sorted for you in time for your start, provided your flat isn't underwater of course!

Would you like us to have a look for you if you can't get hold of the letting agent?   PM me if so.

Guess where I live?  Catcliffe Sad

All the TV news reports you see are coming from the bottom of my road - it's very surreal to see. I don't know what state the house is in - as my housemate/landlord, along with everyone else in the area has been evacuated. It's flooded for sure, but I don't know how bad yet.

I just hope Ulley dam holds - otherwise the damage will be so much worse...plus there's more heavy rain on the way. If the water subsides enough for the weekend i might be able to try and recover some of my possessions Sad It feels rather petty to think like that in light of the deaths caused by the storms - how sad.

However, I don't know whether it's a blessing or not, but I've been stranded at my girlfriend's in Wombwell, just outside Barnsley since Sunday! At least I can work, in a fashion from there at the moment....plus I have some wellies and waterproofs here Smiley Currently it looks like all routes in on the trains, A roads and Motorway from this area are just impassable. Hope everyone else is fairing OK....

Some pictures of the remains of Club Mill Bridge:

This is such a shame.  After the great flood of 1864, every bridge up to Lady's Bridge were destroyed.  Club Mill Bridge was probably built not long after that but now it's gone Sad

More debris

This was taken near Rotherham after the Don has receded a bit.  No idea what they are.....!

I have to say PlusNet's professionalism in such a trying time was faultless. I only heard about the floods when I tried to phone CSC in the morning, and the recorded message warned of long delays because of skeleton staff, but tickets would be answered from people at home.

On a lighter note, I don't suppose the billing department got washed away, and we will all get free broadband?

We keep Finance safely locked up on the 3rd floor for exactly that reason Wink

Just seen this that was linked to Mand's service announcement this morning.

Particularly liked this bit...

Quote
Today we will reach a point where we will have reconnected so many people in Sheffield that allowing them all to use their normal amount of power would do some very serious damage to the parts of the network that are keeping the lights on in Sheffield.  So, we will need to start to limit the power being used throughout the day by imposing a series of relatively short, planned power cuts.

Who's postcode's up for a bit of Level 1 management then? Grin

On a similarly related note, it's just started raining here again Sad

I don't think I have ever been facinated by such informative posts.
The pics and vids are amazing, some sad and some funny. Better coverage here than i've seen on the news.

My sympathies go to those friends and families who have lost loved ones as a result of the floods and to all who will be out great expense due to damage caused.

We had something similar in N.ireland a few weeks ago..... What the hell is up with our weather?

Thanks to all at Plusnet who battled their way into work and those who offered support over VPN to keep the systems up and running. Personally I think I would have gone to the driest pub but then I am from Ireland!

Cheers  Smiley

PS: Hope the rain dosn't stay on for long..... get the candles out.

There is something very odd about Sheffield being flooded but York not being! Smiley

My Dad took some of Meadowhall. I'll get him to email them to me and then I'll add them.

I live on Fife Street and the bridge at the end of the road was under 15ft of water and I'm not joking. An entire house could have fitted!

Fortunately no houses are too near the bridge but the ones at the bottom of the street still suffered some flooding to the ground floor.

Barrow road was also heavily flooded and I've got a picture that shows my mum standing next to the water mark the next day. It comes up to her shoulder.

Well here are some picks of our town and surrounding villages. I agree its nowhere near as bad as Sheffield but its still bad all the same.

We have also just hit the news on BBC saying that the river idle has burs its banks and has covered kings park in at least 3 feet of water.

The river Idle in Netto's car park.

The river Idle in ordsall

The river Idle a little up stream from Retford in a Village call Eaton

Clarborough Village

Two pics from Welham Village bridge (look at the 4x4 and the depth and its not in the middle either)

The chesterfield Canal

Grove Lane in Retford near the town center
