Sheffield Floods 25/06/07

Ok I have just been out to town and the situation seems to be getting worse.

The flood is spreading and the river is rising. According to council workers it is set to get worse overnight.

Pictures below.

Ooh.  That's no good!  More run off? Or is it water from the reservoir?

It is both.

The trent burst its banks in Newark and so is draining into the Idle, the fields are draining into the idle and then the resevoir also is being drained into the idle and some others.

And its rising aswell.

Got some more pics from round here but ill post em later.

Damn i am lucky living in York...

There is something very odd about Sheffield being flooded but York not being! Smiley

Well i don't know why but i was happy :p

There was some water on the ground and at the beck at the bottom of the garden the ducks liked it but that's about it..

I met up with some friends who work in the National Trust yesterday and they said the main cause of most of the flooding (apart from the rain, obviously) was the increase in development up and down the river meaning more concrete and tarmac and less ground for the water to soak into.

So over the last hundred years or so the amount of rain falling hasn't really changed that significantly, but the amount of flash flooding has increased. Water that usually would have been absorbed in ground upstream from towns doesn't, so comes into town where it also isn't absorbed, and downstream from the town it also isn't getting absorbed quick enough, so it backs-up into the towns...

Some very brave (or crazy) souls took the opportunity to kayak down Padley Gorge in the heavy rains, it usually wouldn't be passable - if you've been there and seen how steep it is this must have been one hell of an adrenalin rush!!!

Guess what?  Some of our staff today are stuck at home due to localised flooding!

The Don and Loxely in Sheffield were looking very full and fast this morning!

Anyone else running into issues?

Yeah the rivers were looking bad last night haven't seen them today yet.  Glad the rain has stopped for now or we could have been in trouble again> I think a sever dredging of the don and loxley are in order.

Apparently bakewell and the surrounding areas flooded fairly bad yesterday as well.   Sad

I think dredging those rivers is a problem as it will stir up a lot of old contaminates  from the factories Sad

The river at the side of Meadowhall is looking **very** high again, and with the rain not stopping, Im hoping for a lie in tomorrow! (Its my day off anyway, but an excuse is an excuse).

If you can't enjoy your day off because of the floods, does that mean you get a day off in lieu later on?

Perhaps you should offer to work tomorrow, then when you can't you could get the extra time off back?

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed my lie-in, and didn't get up until 1pm.  I then found Bomberman live on XBLA and played the demo for a while.  It really doesn't get better than this.

Cheesy

There is a demo on XBox Live Arcade, and I have been playing that rather a lot.

Come payday, I am buying it and reliving my mis-spent teenage years!
