Two videos of the Don near Kelham Island.   I suggest that people stay away from the Fat Cat for a while....  Cry

Hmm... do you guys think I'll be okay driving up from Devon this evening?  I'll be heading to West Street and normally come of the M1 junction 33.  I don't know how else to get there lol :-)

Check the traffic reports before you leave, I can't imagine it'll be an easy trip. You'd be better to wait another day if possible.

If you do try it and get stuck trying to get into Sheffield then I could put you up in Chesterfield. Might be better to get off the M1 at 29 and head through Chesterfield anyway. Make sure you take my number with you just in case (should be able to see it on Facebook)

Liam - I'm pretty sure you will be fine - The traffic is moving again.

I didn't take many pictures, but did take the bike as far as I could down the river, which was pretty exciting.

This is a bridge, completely underwater:

You can get an idea of what it normally looks like from Google:

Edited to add a video of the above:

Was very sad to hear about the boy who died quite close to where I live. He was someone my partner and step-daughter knew quite well from the local summer playscheme, and he went to my old school...

I thought J33 was still closed, waiting for the contents of Ulley reservoir to descend on it?

Did anyone get any pictures of the meadowhall area? I heard that was really bad!

Yeah, I can confirm that Meadowhall was pretty bad yesterday. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures, since my phone was low on battery (how typical).

I struggled to get from Sheffield to Wakefield yesterday. Things started to look bleak when I found out that the train station was closed, the bus station was void of buses and full of half-hysterical people, and the traffic in the city centre was completely jammed. So I decided to walk to the J34 at M1 (next to Meadowhall) and ask my grilfriend to drive down from Wakefield to pick me up. I made my way without problems upto Meadowhall, where I was blocked by the Meadowhall road that had turned into a gushing river. Fortunately I was able to backtrack and reach J34 through the Tinsely roundabout instead, only to discover that all exits from M1 to J34 were closed. But traffic on M1 was so slow that it was easy to hop into the car when my girlfriend passed by. From then on it was just a pretty normal case of stuck-in-a-traffic-jam-for-20-miles. Apart from the final stretch through our courtyard of course, where we had to walk waist-deep in the water to get to the front door. Fortunately our building is elevated several feet above the street level, so there's no water inside. Altogether, I think I was very lucky not to face any bigger trouble.

Needless to say, I'm working remotely over VPN today...

From memory, 36-32 South, 32-34 North... not sure why South needs more

South Yorkshire police have just been ont' news saying they're still advising people not to travel to Sheffield.  Apparently the motorway is likely to remain closed for "some time" and that the risk will now remain with the damn whether flooded or not.  Other routes into Sheffield are flooded also and the few that aren't are gridlocked.

I don't know whether to listen to them or not lol :-S  My problem is I don't know Sheffield very well at all lol.  I only ever drive in via Junction 33 along the parkway.

According to this, it doesn't sound sooo bad northbound, but it does seem a bit silly trying: Highways Agency site.

If you give me a bell, I can talk you in from J29 at Chesterfield - it's quicker anyway, but I don't know if that's flooded out.

Whilst driving back from Glastonbury yesterday, I thought we had done well to miss the festival traffic.  Then we reached the M1/M18 junction and came to a halt Angry

Anyway, here's a couple of pics from Sunday

The top picture was taken at about 9.30 this morning, after the flood waters had receded.
