New AC68U router - ADSL settings

Lsst week I installed a new router - Asus DSL-AC68U on my Plusnet ADSL2+ line.  (No fibre here yet, sigh).  The broadband set up wizard went through some steps and after entering the account login/password, all was connected just fine.  Browsing speed and wifi range are all very much improved.  So far so good.
Until this evening, when getting intermittent failures to load web pages. The browser displays an error page stating that the "Reason for failed connection:" is "Connecting to remote server now".  Um...
On the Router's main page, there are two indicators, one for DSL Link - and this always says "UP".  So as far as I can tell there havent been any disconnects here.  My ADSL line is normally rock solid with no drops for weeks on end.
However, the "Internet Status" has shown briefly as "Not Connected".  This got me wondering if the connection/authenticaion parameters are actually correct.  I checked on Plusnet's site, and it doesnt offer much info:

[tt]The terms used for these settings can vary, depending on the make and model of your router. We've included the most common variants below.
Broadband Username/Login name username@plusdsl.net
Connection Type / Encapsulation PPPoA /PPP over ATM
Password The password you use to log in to this website
Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) 0
Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI) 38
Multiplexing method VC Based / VCMUX / VC-Multiplexing[/tt]

The Setup wizard chose PPPoE - changed it to PPPoA
EncapsulationMode: wizard choice:  LLC - I changed this to VC-MUX
MTU range offered is 128-1492 though I entered 1500
Any idea what to choose for PPP Authentication?  I have a choice of 'AUTO', 'PAP' or 'CHAP' ?
What the heck is "Service Category"?

Any hints/tips would be great - thanks!

Re: New AC68U router - ADSL settings

Hi Adam, i made those changes yesterday and reconnected straight away.
I think everything has been OK until just after 12 today, when I was disconnected.  By "disconnected", I dont mean the DSL link itself -  the DSL uptime is 28.5 hours.
It looks more like I'm getting logged out of the plusdsl.net account - at least that's how it appears to the router.

Re: New AC68U router - ADSL settings

A number of people have reported problems with this router- "Search" Asus DSL-AC68U and pick out the adsl ones
Here is an example  http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,137941.0.html
The work round seems to be revert to adsl1 which in your case (shortish line) would not be satisfactory as it limits speed to 8mb

Re: New AC68U router - ADSL settings

I run a similar ASUS router and i think its worth visiting the ASUS support site to check if there is an updated software version for your new box. I initially ran my router at the ADSL1 setting and it was very stable. After updating to the latest software version from the support site, the ADSL2+ setting just started working really well. ASUS updates often offer improved DSL drivers/setting for their devices and can make a noticeable difference to stability. I've added a screen shot of my basic WAN settings for an ADSL2+ connection Smiley note: the ASUS boxes are clever enough to work out the authentication protocol if you leave at auto, if you need to hard code it try CHAP authentication.

Re: New AC68U router - ADSL settings

ClassicLaddie, I think I would have set the MTU to 1500 for ADSL; I understand 1492 is the recommended value for VDSL (fibre).

Re: New AC68U router - ADSL settings

Thanks all I will certainly look further on the ASUS site.  SinceI fiddled about with settings there has been 1 further loss of internet connectivity in 36 hours.
(If it comes to it, I wonder if the AC68U could run using a separate external ADSL modem).

Re: New AC68U router - ADSL settings

Purely for completeness and because I like postng to myself  Crazy - I returned the Asus and went with a Netgear AC something or other.  The Asus was a better router is just about every way, but the Netgear modem has not yet dropped the connection once.
