Re: Any capacity issues?

Is there some problem this morning.  Download speeds are about half I get from a number sites where I normally get full speed (7.7MB/s now).
BT tester indicates the connection is ok, although ping times were 194ms in one test and have double to >40ms - by its measurement.
Inadvertently switched the router off last night so am connected to a different gateway: pcl-ag04.
Standard question: how often can I disconnect the router (not modem) in a day without affect the modem speed sync, in the search for a better 'experience'.

Assuming it takes a minimum of 5 seconds to disconnect and connect, about 17,000 times a day!

Re: Any capacity issues?

but your total throughput will be reduced somewhat if you spend all day reconnecting.
Jelv's correct though, there's no limit on disconnecting/reconnecting your PPP session, it certainly won't affect sync.

Re: Any capacity issues?

As long as your not disconnecting the modem (DSL Sync) then you won't have any issues...

@f p
The BT Tester is not a reliable source of Ping times.
Open a  cmd prompt and ping ntp.plus.net for reference.
You  could also ping any other site of interest.

Re: Any capacity issues?

Thanks for the advice.  On a different gateway and the downloads speeds have recovered to the (new lower) values.  Testing just before and after disconnection; and same files.

Re: Any capacity issues?

Hi all
Okay things haven’t gone quite as planned this week.  The upgrade work on Tuesday on PTN-BNG01 went ahead. However the number of customers that are connecting to that gateway isn’t increasing at the rate that it should be meaning there was  a lot of spare bandwidth on that device Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
We added an extra endpoint yesterday on another device which also had spare bandwidth last night but that should be fully in balance tonight. The IPSC (20CN) bandwidth that we added on Tuesday had to be disabled yesterday as it wasn’t working.
To summarise the balancing on the network isn’t perfect, but we’re working to improve it. As a result there’s spare bandwidth available on some endpoints where it couldn’t be used and some end points that are maxing out their bandwidth. Last night wasn’t as busy compared to Monday and Tuesday but we still saw high demand from people downloading iOS 8.3/OS X 10.10.3 and people watching the FA Cup on BT Sport.
As soon as we have further updates we'll let you guys know.

Re: Any capacity issues?

I am, Mortal Kombat X.
Wonder how many people will be playing it and imaging they're applying a fatality to BT Wholesale or their ISP? If they've bad congestion probably none as they'll be having to go to the shop to get it in, download will take too long Grin

Re: Any capacity issues?

Just an update. I've now moved from ptw-bng01 to ptw-bng02 and I'm still seeing the same congestion.
Looking at the ping graph in my sig you can see the increased ping times around 20:00 to 22:00. Not bad for browsing, but really affecting online gaming and anything latency related.

The actual gaming traffic isn't normally huge, it's the downloads of the game that are big. GTA V comes in at a whopping 59GB, I'm downloading a few hours per night on my home ADSL connection.

Re: Any capacity issues?

I assume steam will have a preload option so the traffic will mostly be 2-3 days before the 14th I think.
There is also the witcher 3 in may Smiley
correction  I just checked steam and preload is available now. line speed is maxed out as I am still on the good endpoint.
