Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Hello everyone
Been reading about interleaving and I understand why it has been applied but I have also read that it can impact on performance, especially with online gaming. I don't game as of now but I had hoped to start playing ARMA again, is this likely to be an issue? Once I have got PlusNet to change my target to 9dB (once they pick up this thread, I assume) is it something I will be able to have turned off or is it required for my line bearing in mind noise (see attached image)?
Currently my ping times are as follows:
ben@reticle:~$ ping -c 15 bbc.co.uk

As ping has never been an issue before for me all I know is the lower the better. Am I likely to manage twitchy FPS games with these figures?
Thanks everyone for your ongoing assistance, it is appreciated.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Hi, just requested the SNR reset for you, should move your downstream target margin to 9dB - hope that stabilises things for you. You're currently on a 9100 profile and will lose up to 800kbit from that, hope it's not that much though - should definitely be worth it if it does stabilise things.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Hi Matt
Many thanks for your assistance, I am more than happy to sacrifice some speed in return for stability. I have dropped the SNR percentage slider in the router settings back down to 100%. I have also closed my support question.
My router is currently reporting 888 up and 9608 down which is fine by me. Thanks again.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Late on Friday I hit the same problems. Upon checking I realised the SNR had dropped back down to 6dB.
I have set the SNR percentage slider to 120% to compensate but please can somebody rectify the issue and set my line to a target of 9dB as opposed to 6dB.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

@myredhotcar I had the same a while ago but just have the PN router, so I can't force the change on my router.  Mine had been stable at 9 for almost a year but then my phone line had to be shifted at the cabinet too exchange after a fault.  Since then it hardly ever drops below 12 because it also started dropping below 6 and had to request it fixed.  Which is after losing fastpath and a couple of SNR resets it never goes down below 12.
So if your router can force the change I would live with it and not get it changed from PN side.  Or you could get less speed, mine went from 4.5-5mbit to 3.5mbit after going interleaved etc
@PN no not a request for help its stable do NOT touch it.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Hi gus,
I am running a DG834GT, there was no option to tweak the SNR with the stock firmware but the DGTeam firmware added the feature. I picked up this router for £20 brand new and I am really glad I did due to the problems I have been having.
When I got in today I found my router is reporting a SNR of 4dB (and dropping) with a sync speed of 12022kbps but I still have the SNR percentage at 120%. Yesterday it was reporting a SNR of 6dB with the same settings; I am unsure whether the router is displaying the correct figures as it seems like a large drop for less than a day, but I am a novice with routers and ADSL. Bizarrely there appears to be no issues today with the internet dropping out so I have to admit I don't have a clue what is going on. There is one LCP down event at 11:50 this morning in the logs. I don't know if PN have changed something or whether my router has lost the plot as anything below 6dB has caused instant problems in the past.  Shocked
Regarding using the SNR adjustments in my router, do you happen to know if this will add overheads to the router?
I am posting some grabs and stats as I am incredibly puzzled as to why there has been such a large drop in SNR, and also why there is apparently no issues today at the current SNR/sync speeds.
If PlusNet have made any changes would someone from the DCT chime in and let me know? I am confused.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Somewhere in this thread it was stated that the line is noisy.  Have a quiet line test been done?  If the QLT identifies noise on the line - hiss / crackles / pops - then there is a POTS issue which first needs to be rectified by your voice service provider.
Try the QLT at different times of day / night.  A line might be fine during the day but very noisy during the night / wet or stormy weather.

Re: Internet stops working when SNR drops below 6dB

Hi Townman
I ran a few test when I had the previous problem at different times and the line sounded clear, but I will run a few more and see if anything has changed. When you say voice service provider would that be the company that supplies my phone service (Plus Net)?
Yesterday, with the SNR percentage at 120%, the line was apparently running at 3dB and I had no problems with dropouts:
Today the line was unusable with the same settings. I bumped the SNR percentage up to 145% which brings it to around 6dB and I will have to increase it once again as the internet is dropping out, which makes no sense to me:

Why did the 9dB target not stick or was it only reset?
