Having trouble using own router (TP-Link TD-W8970)

Hello.
I'm new to Plusnet as of a couple of weeks ago. Everything's been pretty good so far (speeds have been up and down but I assume that'll settle soon) however I'm having lots of trouble trying to use my own router.
Previously I was with o2 and bought a TP-Link TD-W8970 a few months ago as I'd set my home network up to connect my PC/NAS/Smart TV together with gigabit powerline adapters. Obviously I'd like to still be able to use the W8970 for it's gigabit ports (and the wifi signal is a LOT better than the Technicolour box I've been provided with) but I just can't get it working.
I've tried connecting the ethernet cable from the BT Openreach modem into the WAN socket on the W8970 and set it up with the following settings (my username is myusername@plusdsl.net) :

But it never connects. The log on the router contains the same messages on a loop:

I've seen other people experiencing similar issues on these forums but the advice is always just "Leave it, it'll connect after a while".

I suspect you might still be in ADSL modem/router mode. You need to select 'wireless router mode' see pages 19 & 20 of the manual. It will then restart and you may have to go through the pppoe setup again.

Awesome! Can't believe I missed something so obvious. I've just about got it working now. Just a few questions (sorry!)...

  • All diagnostics show as a pass except "Test DNS Root". Is this normal?

  • Should I have DHCP Enabled, Disabled, or on Relay? I'm getting this in the log constantly:

  • Is there any way of setting up the connection without the Openreach box? Can I plug the ADSL cable directly into the W8970 and skip the OR box or does it have to be set up the way I am currently? (Ethernet cable from OR box to WAN socket on W8970).

DHCP should generally be enabled, so all your devices get an IP address from the router. You also need to set the router's clock - if it has a built in time feature, set it to synch with ntp.plus.net
You will need to use the BTOR modem, as the built-in modem is ADSL2+, not VDSL, but from a cursory glance at the web site can be used as you do with an external VDSL or cable modem.

I've no idea what that test is doing TBH but you're not the only one with the problem http://forum.tp-link.com/showthread.php?2428-TD-W8980-Test-DNS-Root

No problem, I've seen a couple of instances in the past with routers such as this, which have ADSL & EWAN capabilities, where you need to tell the router which to use. It was just a matter of downloading the manual and looking for the option...
