Gateway madness!

Hi everyone,
I am often switched gateway between London and an area between Yorkshire and midlands (Nottingham area) It is driving me crazy!!! Even worse my neighbour (BT Infinity) has her gateway up here in the north east! why is it in different locations? When I was with sky ADSL+2 my location was up in north east as well. So why is my location LONDON when i clearly live in Newcastle upon Tyne! The gateway i am now is  pcl-ag03 I check this at  http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway/

Re: Gateway madness!

I thought all the Plusnet gateways are in London. ptn stands for Plusnet Telehouse North, located in London Docklands according to http://www.telehouse.net/our-global-locations/United_Kingdom/

Re: Gateway madness!

Cheers guys. It looks like other ISPs have more locations and locate you to the nearest one.

Re: Gateway madness!

That page is very very very out of date.
Geordiegal: I think you don't actually need to worry about gateway location.  It sounds like you've got a fault or something that needs fixing?

Re: Gateway madness!

what are you using to determine your location? if it's something like google it will be wildly inaccurate.

Re: Gateway madness!

Does look like you're dropping connection a fair bit, unless these are manual reboots?

If they're not then I'd recommend raising a fault at http://faults.plus.net to get that looked into Smiley

Re: Gateway madness!

@matttaylor
Yes these are manual reboots.
@Dvorak
I am using www.speedtest.net and this locates me i'm in London where i'm actually in Newcastle Tyne.  When I type telehouse north it locates for London.

Re: Gateway madness!

On Speedtest.net that runs a quick test to find the server with the lowest ping to try and give you the best results possible. It doesn't have a bearing on where you actually are Smiley
So it will run tests to the server located in Newcastle in this instance.

Re: Gateway madness!

There is no server up in north east, at my other house (virgin media ADSL)  it goes for swindon, which is south. I wonder if there is any server up north?

Re: Gateway madness!

You actually want a speedtest server closer to london because that is where your internet connection joins our network

Re: Gateway madness!

Just to clarify how does my internet come all the way from London? perhaps via satellite or Fibre optic cables? I thought my connection came from the GOSFORTH exchange?

Re: Gateway madness!

Your ADSL connection goes into the exchange and then is tunnelled through the BT 21CN network.  It appears in London at one of our datacentres in Telehouse or Citylifeline.    To the rest of the internet, it appears that your IP address is from London Smiley

Re: Gateway madness!

No difference
It only affects the way it gets from your cab to the exchange after that it follows the same route as the non fibre traffic
