Well you’re here reading this, so it’s a fair bet you’re aware of our Community site – a repository for blogs by staff members on all sorts of issues from the internets, on our own service, on new technologies and also the home to our community forums.
It’s certainly one of the most used and definitely one of the most useful resources that we have. We are, we think, justifiably proud of the way it’s grown and still growing. More…
Unlike Linden Labs’ Second Life here’s no ‘virtual economy’ here and the amount of customisation available is still fairly minimal (no user-generated objects can as yet be uploaded), but you can still have a lot of fun with Google’s new virtual ‘Lively’ worlds.
It’s free to download and install*, and pretty easy to get started with. You can embed your room into a webpage (see below) and even play YouTube videos on plasma TVs and movie screens (although that does get a bit tiresome after the second play-through).
So, created in 45 minutes whilst sat in the sunshine in the real world, here’s a virtual PlusNet Towers.. Come and say ‘Hi’ why don’t you?

There’s also a collection of Backend Plugins which we make use of which are Open Source, and some which aren’t – although these are the few as it’s mainly ones we’ve written which won’t be of any use to other people.
In this blog post I am going to be taking a look at some of the ways in which the two pieces of software we use to power the site differ and some of the challenges this has caused us.
Be warned: some bits of this post may be ‘geeky’ and technical and include code examples. Sorry!
So, a lot of my colleagues at PlusNet know that I like a jolly good knees-up, the occasional beer (ahem) and talking about technology, especially where it can enhance my life and work. The chance to combine all three is usually an opportunity not to be missed, and one such opportunity came up last Wednesday at Leeds GeekUp. More…
Here at Plusnet we're always trying to use clever open source things to make our lives easier. Sometimes we write our own and make other people's lives easier too!
