You asked, we delivered - New Skin

April 1st, 2008 at 09:01 by Jonny Wing

Following much consultation with the moderators and extensive user testing we have developed a new coloured “Skin” for the Community Site. From all the research we undertook it became apparently clear that people were very keen on both pastel colours (specifically pink), and the colour green. Due to this feedback we have developed the “Skin” which you are seeing now. More…

PlusNet Customer Open Day - April 25th

March 31st, 2008 at 15:23 by James

As a number of our customers may well remember, last year we opened the doors of PlusNet Towers to about 25 of our customers. As the event was regarded as great success, we’re going to do exactly the same thing!

On April 25th, 2008, we’ll be holding a number of presentations and group discussions which are open for our customers to come and join in!

For anyone that is interested in joining us, then there is a simple application questionnaire to fill in which can be found here. As there’s only a limited amount of space available, we’ll have to limit the numbers to 30, so please act quickly to avoid disappointment!

March 27th, 2008 at 10:00 by Bob Pullen

Earlier this month Critical Path (whom some will remember from some of our early anti-spam trials), announced the sale of certain assets of its SuperNews Usenet access business, including its software, commercial customer base, trade names and other elements of goodwill, to Giganews, an industry leader in Usenet newsgroup services.

Spring Cleaning the Portal

March 17th, 2008 at 13:06 by Dave Tomlinson

Spring Cleaning the PortalThe PlusNet portal and Member Centre offer our customers a number of tools and applications that help customers manage their accounts (such as Manage My Mail or Move My ADSL), provide information (like View My Broadband usage or Webstats) or allow customers to switch on (or off) certain value added services (like CGI or MySQL).

As part of a project to “clean up” the website and make it less confusing we have been reviewing each of the tools that are available to see how many people actually use them, and have used them in the last 12 months. We’ve also been looking at the functionality of each tool to see whether it is still a useful tool or if it has become outdated. More…

2008 tech predictions

February 28th, 2008 at 13:06 by Dan Kirkland

At the beginning of the year I was going to write about my technology predictions for 2008, but then feigned illness for a while and then forgot. However, PlusNet wouldn’t let me forget for too long and yesterday James threatened me with his pool cue so I thought I’d better get my act together.

My mother whole heartedly believes she has super natural powers and can predict the future (including the Lottery numbers), but unfortunately I really can’t claim to possess such a gift. After nearly 15 years of the National Lottery, my mother still can’t claim to be a millionaire so I guess her powers are not as strong as they could be either. Anyway, I’ll do my best!

I blogged last year about the software development teams that we have set up in India so I thought that now was a good opportunity to bring everyone up to date with the progress we have made and of our future plans.

In my previous post I didn’t give the real big picture around why we are diversifying the physical locations of our software development team, so grab a coffee and read on…

PlusNet’s internal Operating System (known as Workplace) is an extremely large and complicated software system that has been built-up over the previous 9 years. Way back in 1999, PlusNet’s software development team consisted of myself and 3 other guys, sat round a single desk at Victoria Quays, Sheffield. The live web-servers were located under the desk, so quite often you’d get up to make a cup of tea, kick the power cable out and the website would go down for a few minutes while we waited for the server to reboot. This is how it was back then; a small group of people around the business worked round the clock, 7 days a week to build up the business, build the system, support the customers, fight the fires and put in place automated software systems that enabled our customers to “self serve” instead of having to call and speak to our customer support centre. Datacentre Outage - NEW

February 21st, 2008 at 09:14 by Chris Parr

At approximately 01:00am this morning our primary datacentre suffered a complete power outage.

This meant that most of our internal systems, portals, and email were unavailable.

Our network engineers worked to restore the primary services, and internal systems and portal access are now available.

We are continuing to experience problems with email services, and are working on restoring mail access as our priority.

We will provide a further update as soon as possible, and would like to thank you for your patience whilst we resolve these issues.

Kind Regards,
Mand Beckett
Customer Support

Please note that we don’t usually post service status notices on to the Community Site, however as the service status feed isn’t updating correctly to reflect the problems we are posting this here. Any further updates will be made on our usual service status post which can be found here:-

As the service status threads are working correctly this post has been removed from the front page of the Community Site.

Make free Internet calls with Plusnet & fring!Back in November I published an article about a new and improved VoIP service PlusNet were offering in conjunction with the well respected Internet solution provider Gradwell.

Since then, take up has been healthy and we now have almost 600 customers on the new beta platform. Over recent months we’ve been working to enhance the functionality we’re able to provide to our trialists and the first of these enhancements comes in the flavour of fring
