Today’s End of Day comes to you from Sheffield via London via Sheffield. All powered by Plusnet broadband of course.
Rob from CSC:
We’ve been kept busy again today which is not unusual around here, so without further ado here are the top 5 call issues today:
- Router setup. As ever some customers are having difficulties setting up their routers. This is a combination of new customers and people who have purchased a nice shiny new router.
- Fault updates. Some of our customers are unfortunate enough to have a broken broadband connection. Our faults team do everything they can to keep them updated but some times they are unable to contact everyone.
- Email queries. Mainly people having problems with our new IronPort anti-spam platform but also other problems and email set up help.
- Billing queries. We have had some questions about the recent billing problems on our home phone products. These are starting to die down as the underlying problems have been fixed and there’s just a bit of mopping up left to do. Also customers adding new direct debit instructions or updating card details.
- Provisioning updates. Some of our nice shiny new customers can’t wait to get onto our great service and want to know when they will be connected, also people who are moving house asking when they can connect at their new property.
That’s about everything for today so I’ll just finish by saying have a good evening.
Catherine from QA:
Today I’ve been working on some project work to help improve our home phone service. I’ve also been reminding myself how cracking NIN’s album Pretty Hate Machine is. Marvellous

Gary has been working with me on the home phone stuff, but hasn’t been listening to any music, although he has been providing some – when I asked Gavin, he said he’d been listening to “Gary’s random hummings”. Nigel also said all he’s heard music-wise today are “Gary’s dulcet tones of Deck The Halls just now” to help him along while working with our chums in India. Apparently Gary hums “to keep himself vaguely sane”. Paul has been being irritated by festive songs from adverts going round his head, and has been focussing on some problems work with one of our developers to try and forget about it. Matt 2 has been doing project work and having a non-festive The Streets ‘Heaven for the Weather’ going round his head, thanks to having heard it on the radio this morning. Matt 1 has not been listening to music but has been working on problems as well, trying to get the numbers down before the code freeze.
I’m not sure if Rugmini, Babitha and Deeparani have been listening to any music but we did hear some when we spoke to them on Skype the other day

Thanks for reading and stay warm – it’s getting distinctly cold out there.
Matt from Comms:
I’d love to say that in order to make up for not getting a Comms end of day post for the past two days you’ll get an extra long one, but I’m not going to – we’re all too busy for that though we do all feel the guilt from the tips of our hairs down to the very bottoms of our frilly socks.
Today Bob has been drinking lemsip and feeling ill, and moaning about how ill he feels. He’s also been continuing his work with ‘Port now the migrations are complete.
I have been doing my level best to develop carpal tunnel syndrome by drafting the latest Plusnet newsletter.
Chris has been in the forums, and at present is off in one of the several meetings he’s attended today.
Mand has been looking at problems and tickets for most of the day.
James has been on holiday, we hope he’s having a lovely time.
Phew, random link? I suppose I ought to really. Here you go – it’s another physics based drawing game. Enjoy.
Andy from the Web Team:
It’s Thursday today, which means that I’m off to see The Prodigy at the Carling Academy Sheffield.. woo hoo!
Today, to goad the team into passing on their thoughts I provided them with some inspiring music (Spotify link).
And it worked! Here’s Nick: How could I fail to be inspired by such a classic soundtrack!? Well today I’ve been gunning down a number of email templates for Business Refresh, helping Duffy in a dogfight with yet more email templates for billing and racing a jet plane along a runway on a fast bike whilst sporting my 80’s leather jacket. (I fibbed about the last bit).
Next is Pete: I’ve been looking at staff holidays and visitor numbers to our support pages, talking about our CMS system, testing the new Help Assistant functionality and pestering Matt Taylor about the newsletter.
Pete got into the spirit of things by provding a follow up song. Again, Spotify users can listen here.
Sadly the theme didn’t continue in the other responses, but here’s what they got up to anyway:
Colin: Code Reviews, small bit of development
McWojtek: i’ve been debugging upgrade process and working with code reviews pretty much all the day long
Duffy: Problem fixes
Mark: Mark has been adding spit and polish to our new business product pages, whilst worrying about the lack of sunspots.
Sam: Illustrations for BPR (that’s Business Product Refresh)
Tam: I’ve been testing the new workplace dashboard on gamma and perusing BS8878 draft british standard for accessible websites.
Phil: Problem fixing ahead of code freeze and listening to A1 on spotify (I’m not cruel enough to link to that)
James: Beta testing help assistant improvementsAnd finally me – I’ve been working on hardware inserts and rewriting parts of our Spam protection support pages so they better fit our new IronPort system.
