No snow in Sheffield today but lots of ice. Lots of slippery ice. To make up we’ve got an End of Day with lots of links and images. Woop!
The improvements to the task management tool that Dan & I have been working on for the past month went live today. I wish we could show you how cool it is! Aside from that we’ve been pretty cold and working on the internal workplace dashboard which should be going live next week. James has been freezing and tidying up the code for the Help Assistant search as well as fixing bugs from the VAT change. Gary has been freezing, fixing VAT bugs and working on the line speed checker along with Phil and Mark who have also been onthe chilly side. Sam has been freezing and fixing VAT bugs in between meetings and showing us his 16 inch Woody. Andy’s been freezing, fixing VAT bugs, working on Ironport and fixing problems. Nick has been freezing, fixing VAT bugs and working on the high speed broadband pages. Pete’s been doing “all sorts of different things” which I think means he’s been freezing. Jonny and Kelly have been freezing and doing the managery type things they usually do. Did I mention it was cold in the office today? Actually as I write this it’s getting noticeably warmer and I’m beginning to be able to feel my hands. Hooray for Jim C, master of the air con!
Chris from Comms has the following message for you:
We wish you a merry Shrove Tuesday. Welcome to the beginning of the end (of day), unless the Comms segment is put halfway down the post because then it’s not really the beginning is it? Or am I talking gibberish, as normal? [Gibberish, I'm afraid - Ed]
So let’s get on with the day’s activities. Bob came in to work to be greeted by a very festive scene on his desk, in true humbug spirit he removed it all and sat there grumbling afterwards. I think he’s mainly been working on ‘Port stuff again, but can’t be sure as I don’t want to talk to someone resembling Scrooge.
Next up is James, now he’s the furthest person away from me on the comms desk so I had to actually raise my voice slightly to ask him what he’s been up to today. His answer was ‘forums’, so there you go. I suppose a little picture of the layout of our desk would be helpful for those of you wanting to visualise our work environment, so here goes, brought to you by the joys of paint.
Matt’s been emailing lots of people. Email email email, that’s been his day today. Wonder if he’ll dream of email tonight. Probably not because Matt doesn’t sleep, he waits with Mr Stabby at his side.
I’ve been in a few forums and also been helping to sort out our Christmas rota for the festive season. Other than that I’ve mainly been making strange noises and spouting incomprehensible phrases.
Mand’s been working on WLR tasks and problems, doesn’t sound fun does it? But it needs doing and Mand’s the person for the job.
On a side note, comms have ordered a ‘large box of nostalgia‘ so that can be our link for the day.
Tatty bye

James from CSC:
After a day which seems to have been a little less hectic than we usually see on a Tuesday in the CSC, here is our Top 5:
1. Router setup – We are still seeing a lot of calls because of the issue with the Thomson routers. Fortunately the number of these calls are dying down now. We are also getting quite a few people calling for help setting up new equipment that has been bought over the weekend.
2. Fault updates – These are always high up, people wanting to know how we are getting on with getting their existing faults fixed as broadband is getting increasingly important in people’s lives.
3. Provisioning updates – A number of calls from people checking the status of their orders or to provide further information after a call to say there had been a problem.
4. New faults – Another one that is always going to be on the list, people notice that there is a problem as the connection is being used instead of people going out into the cold!
5. Email setup – Usually these calls come shortly after the router setup calls, as well as people who have been out at the weekend and got themselves a new PC. Although we have amazing help guides available on our website, some people do prefer a little bit of help when they don’t feel too confident.
Catherine from QA:
Somewhat of a surreal day for me today, as I started off with a discussion about Dr Robotnik, making mayonnaise, and then in the afternoon James from Content volunteered to be locked in a large box of tea, as long as he could choose what sort (he chose English Breakfast). It’s also been very busy, with the team concentrating hard on various problems and project work. In between, Matt 1 gave us some jelly babies and Gary sampled some cream cheese and chive crisps, which didn’t agree with him. See you all tomorrow….
Adam from Business Support:
A slightly hectic day for business support today but we have managed as best we can to keep everything under control. I personally have been picking up partner orders and queries today in Gordon’s absence. Its been a busy day on partner today with several orders to process and check plus a number of differrent queries which have all been responded to and handled in due course. Laura has been doing a fantastic job on partner provisioning work and has been coping well with the high workloads at the moment.
Martin has been focussing on the logged faults workflow while Chris and Mark have been picking up the technical and customer service. We have all been picking up calls as quickly as possible.
Another very productive day for Sam and Dan on teleworker too and as usual they have been successful at handling tickets and only a few calls have gone onto overflow which the rest of the biz support team have picked up and handled in due course.
I should point out that that was 'Dr Robotnik making mayonnaise'. It's because he's an Eggman, you see....
Not sure why Chris/comms thought it was Shrove Tuesday............... that comes day before Lent, not 3rd day of Advent!
You really don't know Chris very well
Today was midsummers day
