End of Day: 25th November

November 25th, 2008 at 17:39 by Kelly Dorset

Tuesday draws to a close! Today I’ve been stuck at home waiting for a plumber to turn up and fix my shower. Their estimated mid-morning very quickly turned into mid-afternoon, so I’ve been using our VPN to finish of role profile documentation and Skype to talk to our development teams about the upcoming VAT changes. What has everyone else been up to?

Matt from the Comms Team

Contemplate: What would be the plural of Twitter (as a verb I mean)? No, I wasn’t thinking of Twittering…

Today I’ve been mostly dealing with the comms that will surround the changes to VAT – aside from that there have been a few change controls plus some extra work on various ongoing tasks I have.

Bob has been, as ever, incredibly angry and also very busy with ‘Port (Ed: Ironport, that is) and network change controls. He has also ducked his head into a couple of forums and a couple of meetings.

Chris has been posting service status for most of the day. He’s also been in the forums and making extensive use of twitter. Chris also discovered that a plastic cup full of salt sachets makes an amusing missile.

Mand has been picking up problems, and has sat in a couple of meetings too – some of the Development change controls also found their way to her and have been summarily dealt with.

James has been blogging for most of the day, hidden upstairs on the Web Development floor.

For the link of the day I will post something that you may find cruel, but you may on the other hand quite enjoy. Just remember to feed him

Simon next:

Hi, Simon here from Networks again, I have been mainly looking into backups for Parbin (Ed: This is what we collectively call our Pay As You Host, Just The Name and Port995 services) and a new alpha platform for our development team.
Dan has been doing Tickets, Tickets, abuse and RIPA’s
Dunk has been on monitoring as he is now oncall
Mark has been on the Ironport project
John R has been looking into the vat changes that should be rolled out soon
Al has been doing documentation and random DBA requests
Neil has been on tickets
Steve has been rebuilding laptops and looking into issues on one of our Domain Controllers

The major issue of the day in Ops was a DSL “pipe” drop on the Brightview platform, due to our fast actions and resilient network there was less of a customer impact and the platform is now recovering nicely.

Catherine from QA

Ah, holidays are always great, aren’t they? Still, I’m also glad to be back, despite the arctic breeze coming from the air conditioning (always a bone of contention – Gary’s been too hot all day…)
Today I’ve been working with our Polish chums and also getting in some admin in the gaps.
Matt 1 has been working from home whilst he gets some things sorted out. He’s been on problems today and has been very quiet (not just because we couldn’t hear him ).
Matt 2’s been doing some work on our linechecker with Simon, one of our senior developers.
Gary has been doing interesting things with our code Framework.
Gavin has been doing things with QA Wizard and picking up some problems here and there.
Paul has been re-vamping our standard regression test plan to make it a bit easier for our Indian colleagues to use.
Finally, here is an awesome link. Watch the video at the top of the page – it’s work safe.
Have a good evening!

Andrew from the CSC

It’s been a busy day in the CSC so far, we’ve had lots of calls as the Ilford Node went a bit wobbly and knocked a lot of our customers off. All credit to Brad, Adam and Kev for managing the floor and rescuing the Call Answer rate from the doldrums whilst the TSM’s all had a big meeting to talk about bags of dust.

The Top 5 is from Si in Team B today:

  1. Router Setup – Thomson routers are still accountable for a large amount of the calls coming into the CSC. This is predominantly the TG585v7 routers which have shipped with Plusnet firmware (Ed: We’ve a batch of routers with firmware issues :( )
  2. Speed Faults – Many people calling in with speed issues. These have been caused by usage issues or intermittent connections
  3. Fault Updates – Quite a lot of customers calling for updates on faults, or in response to SMS messages.
  4. Auth Issues – Mainly caused by a MSO affecting the Ilford Node.
  5. Billing Queries – Customer wanting to update their billing details after receiving a letter about Maestro cards and continuous authority payments.

Last, but most defintely not least is Spence from the Marketing Team

Hello all,

A busy day for us guys in Marketing today, with Chris having his head stuck in spreadsheets all day.. lucky boy. I’ve been planning site improvements for the sales pages, Gav has been finishing off some Christmas Decor for the Sales pages (coming soon…) as well as working on some new offer pages. Shailini and Amy have been talking to our affiliate friends amongst many other jobs today too.

That’s all for now,
Spence.

Right, that is your lot for today. Have a nice evening!

k
