End of Day: 23rd October

October 23rd, 2008 at 18:01 by AliMcGowan

OK, it’s Thursday, I am working from home in Manchester, it looks like winter outside and I am your Ed today. I didn’t really have anything witty or amusing to write, so I’ve left it up to this lot to keep you entertained!

So first off, it’s Chris from the CSC:

Another very productive day here in the team. The Sheffield Wednesday fans are still smiling after Sunday’s win against United.

Today we have had our team meeting. We had updates from Carl in the provisioning team and Mand from Comms talking about the new offers we have or that are coming up soon. Last but not least, we had Kat from the Development department to update us on the speed check process. This is being added to the sign-up process and Kat also provided an insight into what new business and business phone packages are coming soon.

The calls we have had today have been varied, from general billing and package enquiries to hardware configuration help.

Thanks for reading and bye for now!

Cheers Chris. Next up it’s Ryz from Dev

Dev TLA of the Day: OMG.

I spent a chunk of this morning in a scoping session for an upcoming project, kicking the tyres and seeing what we’re going to slide into the phase of dev that I’ll be leading. I got a good handle on what’s about to happen, so I can get stuck in before I go on holiday at the end of November.

Elsewhere in the department I heard whispers of TR-69, signup hardening and line checkers, as streams of development collide and cross project work starts to happen, and code gets some attention to make it more resilient.

Stressful day, hence the TLA, and the continued heat hasn’t helped. The pedestal fans now make noises like crickets chirping, so it _REALLY_ does feel like we’re in some tropical environment. OMG.

Thank you dude. Now over to Matt in Comms. As I type this I have not yet clicked on any of their linkies but am wondering what randomness awaits…

Another day of fun and complete non-frivolity today. Only one cup of tea, too :-( (Ed – I’ve had 5 cups, ha ha!).

Some service status action was had today, along with a fair amount of forums on my part. Mand got chatting to our new account manager who sounds very nice indeed, she’s also been keeping the CSC up to date and sorting out some training.

Chris has been on top of the problems today doing all sorts of testing and such. He’s also had a few meetings to sit in.

Bob has been off today with the dentists (Ed – his appointment was at 2.30… Tooth-Hurty… geddit??!??!?!!? Oh never mind.) though I have seen him about in the forums, and finally I’ve been writing some more emails and have posted a few on the community site (and ThinkBroadband).

Achieve a state of Zen this evening by meditating on the following: If olive oil comes from olives, and corn oil comes from corn, where does baby oil come from?

Here is a random link. One of the most interesting browser-based paint programs I’ve ever seen. I particularly like the draw-your-own shuriken star brush.

Thanks Matt! I’m going to try that paint program myself… Next up it’s Andrew in the Web Team

Ey up! This is Andrew from the Web Team.  It’s been a while since I wrote this so hello Nan and all that have missed me. I should also mention Half a Chicken but I’m not sure how to squeeze it in.

Today I’ve been looking at emails we send in relation to billing and working on improvements to our email system.

I know I’ve had a good response when asking around the floor everyone gets their own line!

Mark: I’ve been writing content for a new line speed checker, which will give an estimate of the speed of service you’ll get. I’ve also been looking forward to seeing Aimee Mann this evening.

Nick: Today I have mostly been working on…Problems, Peer reviews, billing research and edits to High-Speed Broadband articles based on feedback from Products.

Sam: Business Refresh work.

Gary: Business Refresh work and getting SVN to work.

Phil: Line checker work and talking about Bergerac.

G-Man: Signup work and House moves.

Kelly: Writing role profile documents.

Wojtek: Upgrade Journey work and NADS.

Tamlyn: Bug fixing the new workplace dashboard (iGoogle) thingie (Ed – we LOVE it!!)

Thanks Andy. This is where it was all *meant to end*… I had just closed the thread in Workplace for people’s submissions and along came QA! Here’s Catherine with a friendly ‘Bah!’ (though I think that was aimed at me, ha ha!):

Bah!

Today has been positively arctic, so much so that we’ve lined up a crew of penguins to automate our regressions process. Hmm… wishful thinking, but there’d be complaints if I just said how hot it’s been again :-)

More rollouts last night so we’ve been down two today (Paul’s first roll went well – phew!), I’ve had an interesting day learning about working practices in other cultures, doing some testing with one of our many Bens and being annoyed when one of my esteemed colleagues took the last of the milk and didn’t replace it!!

Gavin has been working on some mail changes with one of our developers. Matt 2 has been very carefully scrubbing his keyboard till it shines (really!) and also ‘oh, loads of stuff’, not least problem fixes with our Polish friends.

Gary has *still* been quiet (I hope he’s not ill) (Ed – don’t worry, he was very noisy in a Skype call I had with him; he may have been trying to remove the fluffy doggy someone put on his desktop) and has been slogging away on all sorts of things. He’s currently talking to James from Web Dev about a rollout.

Matt 1 goes home early these days (he gets in early too, I should add) so I can’t ask him what he’s been doing. He was having a conversation about tbls at lunch, though, so I’ll guess it’s been a development day for him. Finally, Stephen has been…doing ‘lots of fun things’. Apparently this means ‘organising stuff we can test’. See you tomorrow everyone.

Well, I am off now for another cup of tea and a slice of cake. Ooooooooooh I can’t wait.

Have a pleasant evening! :-)

Ali McGowan.

@Andrew from t'Web Team: 'Ey Up' - isn't that the Yorkshire version of 'Hello' magazine?
