End of Day: 15th October

October 15th, 2008 at 18:09 by Kelly Dorset

Today I am chuffed to bitstm. We’ve just launched a new enhancement to Workplace, our internal intranet application which we’ve lovingly called QuickPoms. We’ve called it Quickpoms is because its an enhanced interface to our task management tool (POMS) to make it loads easier to use. Huge thanks to Tamlyn and Dan for working their socks off to get it done!

So, that is what a chunk of Web Dev have been up today, what about the rest of you Plusnetters?

Ben is here first with the update from the Customer Support Centre

It’s been a typical day in the CSC with all queues under control and well over 1,000 calls answered before 4pm. So without further ado, here are our top 5 issues for today:

  1. Hardware setup
This one’s never going to go away, customers are always going to need our help setting up routers. There’s usually a simple set up path when setting up a new computer with a new router, but most problems present when old DUN connections need to be removed, or DNS settings updated when they have been manually set as part of an older connection set up.
  2. New faults
The usual mix of no synchronisation, intermittent synchronisation and authentication faults have been reported today. Most of these faults are easily resolved by checking router settings or the usual master socket checks, and only a minority are being passed through to the faults team for further investigation.
  3. Fault updates
Our faults team work long shifts to try to cover most of the day but I know from personal experience that it can be hard to contact customers when we need further information. This means a lot of voice mails are left which in turn lead to calls coming back in from the customers whether to provide the requested information, or just chase an update.
  4. Provisioning updates
We’ve seen an increase in sales recently due to some great publicity and this pushes the number of calls up chasing updates on provisioning orders.
  5. Email set up
We provide email addresses for free with our broadband accounts and a large proportion of our customers take advantage of these. However, with advanced options available such as redirects and aliases to go with extra mailboxes, customers often call in for help or advice setting them up.

Chris Parr is up next with the Comms Team Update

Matt’s been sending flying monkeys to take over the world, he failed.
Bob’s been very jovial today (and I’m not being sarcastic either).
Mand’s been arguing with me about who is the best at fixing things. I won.
I’ve been arguing with Mand about who is the best at fixing things. I won.
Mand disagrees with who won and is still arguing.
I’m now listening to music and ignoring Mand.

Other than that we’ve been busy sending newsletters, going to lots of meetings, training the CSC and generally being awesome (as Comms always are).

There are a couple of links again today. One is the new Macbook.

And the other is a random article from Wikipedia. Click on it a few times.

Last up tonight is Rys from Development

Simon’s been neck-deep in JBoss training today, which might sound a bit odd for a PHP developer, but we’re doing a bit of cross-training here these days to make sure we’ve got no single points of failure on the floor.

The PHP team outnumbers the Java team by more than an order of magnitude, so the chance to help write and maintain the Java code base and the execution platform is being offered to those interested. Simon will be neck-deep tomorrow, too.

I’ve been writing documentation and training guides for the RCS migration all day, along with checking out some Bazaar propaganda (cheers Chris!) that compares git (what we’re moving to) to bzr (another distributed RCS which has its own strong points).

Elsewhere there’s been some hardening of our use of the BT Service Provider Gateway system, and Henry and Nigel spent the morning tracking down a hard to find bug. There was much swearing as they resigned themselves to My First Debugging principles in order to track it down.

That’s about it, quiet day down here, and I spent most of it with the new Chase and Status album, procured at lunchtime. First time I’ve bought music in ages, felt strangely good.

and that’s it. I’m off to play with Quickpoms some more :D
