End of Day: 14th October

October 14th, 2008 at 17:48 by Tamlyn Rhodes

Today we’ve been spotting corporate easter eggs. FedEx and Toblerone both have hidden images in their logos: find them!

Today in Web Development James has been putting the finishing touches on the new accessibility help page due to go live later this week. Sam has been prototyping the business brand refresh. Phil has been continuing work on My Account as well as doing some JavaScript code reviews for me. Dan and I have been stamping out last the last few bugs in the intranet improvements which are now rolled to a testing machine. Looks set to go live tomorrow morning and I’m keen to see what people will think of it. Mark has been working on the product upgrade journey and the broadband speed checker before jetting off to Prague for the rest of the week. Duffy has been training in the ninja art of Kellyness with Grand Master Kelly. Colin’s been making changes to the help assistant wizard system.

Bob from Comms:

It’s currently 4:40pm as I write this and it’s looking haplessly grim outside. It’s reached that time of year when it’s dark when I get to work and dark when I leave work. Given the fact that I’m usually known to hibernate during the day on weekends I’m not expecting to see much daylight at all over the coming months! :(

Anyways, today I’ve been mainly familiarising myself with the documenation for some up-and-coming network-related projecty type stuff.

Chris has been working on problem investigation and CSC training, whilst Matt’s been working on this month’s newsletter.

Mand’s been out of the office today.

For today’s random link I’ll keep with the (lack of?) daylight theme and provide this link to some rather breath-taking images of the Sun.

Ryszard from Development:

Today’s been a weird one for me, as it’s the first full day I’ve had to work on our revision control migration. I joined Plusnet a year ago yesterday, and the stuff I’m working on now is what I’ve been most passionate about fixing since I got here, and now I get to properly sink my teeth into it. Om nom nom!

We had a meeting about it this afternoon, to see how progress is going and how it’s syncing up with the work Ben Spencer is doing on our new alpha integration environment. Truth is, we both help each other on our respective projects since there’s natural overlap, and it’s nice to work together on this stuff when we can. It’s the biggest change to Plusnet’s development practices in its history, so it’s crucial we get it right.

Elsewhere my old teammate Ben is flying solo again now I’ve left, but he’s doing a sterling job. Henry’s itching to join him, just as soon as his current project work is out of the way. Slowly but surely the new departmental reorganisation is kicking in.

Finally, congrats to Networks, Products and Dev on getting our first 21CN circuits up and running on the live Interwebs. Here’s to a successful rollout in the future on the mothership’s shiny new infrastructure.

Richard J from CSC:

Today has been an average day for total calls with 1,300 in the call centre so far. The top 5 reasons for calling were as follows:

  1. The top reason for calling today has been router setup. This has been due to the recent warehouse issue being resolved and the back orders for hardware starting to be received.
  2. We have had a few calls today for customers experiencing issues with their connection. We have either started the faults process or advised of some checks that need to be completed to ensure that the fault is not with customer equipment.
  3. A lot of customers today have been ringing in for updates on their new orders. We have been advising if there were any issues with the original order or advising when the new broadband line is due to be completed.
  4. We have had the usual influx of calls from customers for help with email setup to allow them to access their email directly on their computers, or mobile devices such as iPhones or BlackBerry.
  5. Customer have been calling in today or had a call from our faults team to discuss their current faults. We have been looking into their faults and speaking to our suppliers to get the issues resolved.

All round a good day with a steady stream of calls and tickets. Also the hard working floor managers have kept the call wait below 10 minutes.

How about splitting the RSS feeds into two, so that some of us can choose to get the occasional/sporadic announcements and news and tech items, without the daily End of Day posts?

Choice is good, right?

Tamlyn

Hey Jane, you can subscribe to RSS feeds for individual categories by going to the category page and adding /feed/ to the end of the url - for example this is a feed of just the End of Day posts http://community.plus.net/blog/category/eod/feed/

Getting a feed of all-but-one category is a bit harder so I created this feed with Yahoo Pipes that filters out posts with a title of "End of Day" leaving you with just the meaty goodness :) http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=ymKClqOb3RGLX_ZHpgt1Yg&_render=rss

Hope that helps!

We really ought to have a "feeds" page to list all this info and help people with RSS in general.

Thanks Tamlyn, that works fine (and is a good tip for when I have a simialr wish on other sites).

I think having a PlusNet "feeds" page is a good idea too. You've already added it to Quickpoms, right? ;)

All this talk of Easter Eggs and Toblerone is making me peckish.

The RSS feed page idea isn't new.. I thought we had one :O We certainly should have one that explains how to 'do' RSS.. . When we find it again we'll add Tam's 'pipes'.
