21CN Trial Update - October 2008

October 10th, 2008 at 17:57 by Dave Tomlinson

It’s time for another update on the progress of our 21CN trial. We’ve been putting in a lot of work over the last couple of weeks and we now have our first two 21CN lines live and they have connectivity across our new interconnect link out to the internet.

In order to provide customers on 21CN we’ve had to install a completely new backhaul interconnect link to take the traffic from BT into our network. We’ve also completed the initial development work on our backend systems to allow customers to see faster than 8Mbps speeds on our network (so long as their sync speed is that high of course) as well as to feed in to line speed change report from BT so we can update the speeds on our network as the sync/BRAS speeds update. Along with a few other bits and pieces like changes to fault checker to allow all our systems to work smoothly.

Both of these first two orders, and all of the early orders we are placing, are staff accounts so that we can iron out any little bugs along the way. It also allows us to learn the new systems that are involved and ensure we document the new processes along the way.

We expect to have a third staff line up and running early next week and then the next batch early the week after. For those interested in figures, both lines have seen an increase in sync speed over their 20CN Max speeds, the first from around 5Mbps to 7Mbps and the second a little lower being just under 5Mbps before to just over 5Mbps now.

Exciting times I hope you’ll agree and as ever we’ll keep you updated with the progress along the way.

Is it true that 21CN wont be able to support IP6? I've read this in a few places in the last few days which sounds slightly worrying?

It doesn't support it currently, but I doubt it's true that it won't. The WBC product is still in development and once their is demand from enough ISPs to provide IPv6 network support I'm certain BT will enable it.

It appears that BT didn't see this one coming and are saying to ISPs that if they think IPv6 is a needed they should submit a formal Statement of Requirements and BT will think about it.
