End of Day: 29th September

September 29th, 2008 at 17:52 by Tamlyn Rhodes

It’s the end of the day which means it’s time for the End of Day!

Today I’ve been working with Dan on the new interface for our internal task management system. Colin very kindly spent an hour or so getting my Linux development environment set up properly as well as helping Andy, Nick and pretty much everybody else. Gary and Phil have been working on the new My Account with Gary also doing some Green Bee updates. Sam and Mark have been continuing their work on the upgrade process. Duffy and Andy have been tackling problems and improving the spam page in Manage My Mail. Nick’s been writing new support pages and Kelly’s been in his usual Monday meeting madness.

Ian from CSC:

It’s been an average day in the CSC today. There don’t seem to be any major issues, just the usual calls regarding faults and provisioning. Today’s top 5 issues are as follows:

  1. Authentication Problems – A large number of customers have been calling with authentication issues. There have been no major service issues or BT outages noticed, simply a lot of people with incorrect usernames and/or passwords.
  2. Router Setup – We generally get a high volume of calls from new customers who are having trouble setting up their routers and from existing customers re-configuring their current ones.
  3. New Faults – When all our initial diagnostic checks fail to resolve a connection problem we have to raise a fault for further investigation by our faults team.
  4. Fault Updates – Customers calling for updates on outstanding faults. Existing faults often require a lot of repetitive testing to confirm whether the fault has been resolved or not at each stage of the faults process.
  5. Provisioning Updates – A fair few customers calling today to find out when they are going to be activated. Also a lot of people calling to provide additional information, for example line activation dates or MAC codes.

Ryan from the Customer Services Team:

It’s my first day back after a week’s holiday so I’ve been catching up on the goings on from last week. It’s James’ first day back after his holidays as well so we’ve been easing him gently back in… managers, eh?

So it’s been a fairly busy day today in the CSC although not completely bleak’ as we’ve had the ‘Theme Of The Day’ to keep us amused and motivated. Most of the calls today have either been about chasing up hardware orders or querying the new cessation policy. Its also a first for the Customer Services Team this week with us taking router configuration and email setup calls so its been a fast learning curve but we’re all getting stuck in. Tonight we have Andrew, Damien, Mark, Chris and Matt working in Customer Services so I’m sure they’ll all appreciate being kept busy.

Ben W from Development:

Our usual development writer, Rys, is away on annual (X-Box) leave until Wednesday. So I’ll be writing the EOD for today.

Today I’ve been working with our teams in India, planning and investigating the new tasks they are going to be working on, reviewing the code they have been sending back, and responding to any questions that they may have. On top of that I’ve been preparing to roll live some of the bug fixes and feature requests which we have been working on as a team. It can be difficult working with a remote team, but we have a good relationship with them, and we keep in constant touch, which is the key.

Lukasz (with the help of Seb) has been installing XDebug and integrating it with the Eclipse IDE. He’s going to create some training videos for us on how to install it, and how we can use it to debug our code. I’ve also been oranising some knowledge sharing presentions on the Eclipse IDE – this Thursday Karol is going to be running one on the Clay ERD plugin.

And we’re all glad to see Ben S back after 2 weeks off on holiday. I’m sure he’s glad to be back as well.

Everyone else must to be working hard this afternoon, because it’s quiet on the development floor. Apart from the constant tap-tap of keyboards, you could here a pin drop…

Chris from Products:

We’re nearly into October and Sheffield Wednesday are still above Sheffield United in the league. We even beat Charlton at the weekend – much to the annoyance of Ian Wild and Brad KT :) Lets see how long it lasts.

It’s been a quiet day on the marketing desk – Amy and Spence are both off on annual leave and Shailini has been attending a variety of different meetings. Gavin has continued his work on our signup pages while Sameer has been producing some weekly reports for the rest of the team.

I’ve been looking into recent referrals performance, preparing an email send and attended a good few meetings of my own.

Matt from Comms:

Bob left early today, so I’ve been able to sit in the angry chair. It’s been…. well, it made me angry.

I’ve been sending mails today. That’s been about it. I’ve also had a record number of jabber conversations open at once, and if ever I’m asked why it is that women can multitask and men can’t I’m going to laugh that kind of laugh that makes you wonder if the laugher is as close to insanity as the laugh makes them sound. It’s been one of those days.

Bob meanwhile has been actioning change controls, has had a couple of meetings, has been about on usenet and has sorted a bunch of mailflow stuffs.

James has been around the forums mostly today, though he’s found the time to take care of some project work and some meetings.

Cparr has been off again, we all miss him.

Even better news, Mand should be back with the comms team from her secondment as a BA soon. That will be nice, at least I’m looking forward to it and if anyone else isn’t then we still have ‘The Educator’ (the cricket bat has a name, you see…)

Random link time – I’ve learned a lot of these myself. It’s true, if you ever go up against someone who’s glowing blue, you’re in trouble.
