EOD (in Pirate): 19th September

EOD (in Pirate): 19th September

If yer be (sea) sick of all thar talkin' like a pirate, ye'd be best to look away now.  For today has been thar best day of the year for wannabe pirates everywhere.  Even on Mars it seems.. ‘Interplanetary' Talk Like A Pirate Day now it seems.. Let's take a stomp around the good ship Plusnet and make sure the scurvy dogs have bin swabbin' thar decks.  It'll be a good flogging for anyone not working hard I'll tell ye..   Yarrr here be the Comms EOD (Pirate Chris)

  • Cap'n Carl Firecrotch claims he's been doin' problems today, I don't believe him and think he's been stashin' t' grog somewhere and tryin' t' find t' buried booty.
  • Cap'n Jack Roughknuckles be keelhauling the mainsail and generally being a scurvy dog.
  • Cap'n Darius Burntbeard got a piratical overhaul of his avatar and has been yarrrring in many a meeting.

I be wanting to know why I be t'only non Cap'n on these shores, me pirate name be Gangrenous Tobias Jones so be it. I be answering questions posed by ye customers in the great, grand forums of Community and walking the plank into me task work. That'll be all for now, avast and begone.   Web Development (Pirate James) Yarrrh ye land lovers (that's lubbers yer bilge rat - Cap'n) let's be seein' what's been shivering (other than Plusnetters from the effects of the air con system) in the Web Dev locker today...... First up we have Andy "Pieces of 8" Silver who has been writing quick install guides for the new Thomson routers, rolled out the new faults troubleshooting section (YAY! -Cap'n) to live, and picked up a few problems to work on. Mark "Can I borrow yer parrot" Sparrow has been exclusively working on a exciting new project and wishes to apologise for describing it as boring last week. Colin "Climb the rigging" Sea-Dog has been chasing code reviews and testing tasks, has undertaken some bits of coding, and enjoyed the Web Dev journal session. Duffy "Make ready the sails" Starboard has been looking up what the DOM (Document Object Model) is all about and has been working on various problems all day. Wojtek "Walk the plank" Barnacles has been helping the CSC with Polish customers and has been working on some design tasks. Dan "Eye patch" Doubloons has been constructing the new booking marking tool for Workplace. Phil "Davey Jones" Peg-Leg has been drumming away with MyAccount, integrating new layouts with new functionality. Gary "Rockett the Pirate" Treasure-Map has been tinkering with MyAccount design work and working on a MAAF problem. Sam "Shot and Powder" Cannon has been working on problems. Kelly "Wheres all the rum gone?" Crossbones has been attending to some admin stuff and assisting with the upgrade process. Captain Pete has been reviewing email content, looking at problems, trawling the forums, and working with the Comms team. Finally I've been scrubbing the decks of the Customer Generated Support Pages project making the very final touches before testing starts. That be ya lot land lovers, yarrrrrrh!!!!! Development (Pirate Rys) It appears my shipmates have been talking like pirates all day. Avast, I don't know what the scurvy-ridden land lovers (again!  What is it with you lot? - Cap'n) have become afflicted with, so you'll just have to put up with me being normal and that, arrr. It's been a grand ol' day sailin' the Plusnet high seas o' Development. The coding bounty to be had fighting the Pirate Bugs of Framework is plentiful, and there's always bottles o' rum to be had at the Three Tuns after work. Ahem. I've been battling the urge to go home and code in the sun with my laptop and 3G. Arrrr, I needed to be in the office for a couple of things, otherwise working from the poop deck would have been a winning idea. Elsewhere, Farhan's being doing the Dance of Apology (sounds wicked.. Did anyone record that? - Cap'n) on a webcam (apparently, I didn't witness the horror), Ben W's been finishing off Secret Project bug testing on gamma so we can go live, Ben L's been verbally abusing the tickets system on his alpha box, Rupert's been discussing ideas for throwing top-level exceptions in our old database layer (while nomming (eh? no idea.. have you been on the rum? - Cap'n) crisps and bopping to tunes), and Karen took a half day, the part-timer Wink See you next week, if I can avoid Pirate Pete making me walk the plank for this poor attempt at talking like a pirate, yarrrrrrrrr!   Faults Team (Pirate Brad) Rich, Tom, Munky (Andy), Tony and Adam have been dealing with this there ol' Jep report. Yarr! Our resident Blackbeard Tony "T-Bone" has been moaning about many things from sea to sailing sea Wink but has continued doing ye Jep and pushing those faults which dare to be ongoing. Faults Pirate Pete (don't get ye confused now me hearties.. - Cap'n) has been making those Home Phone Faults walk that plank of the damned and swashbuckling those evil line spirits. Ben and Jon have been dealing with yer new faults raised into our domain, some of you lucky dogs may have received an update from these crewmembers today. Me? Well I've been sorting through these new faults raised and doing other miscellaneous things. Now where's me treasure? Arr! Shiver me timbers ye old scallywags!   Networks (Pirate Lee) This week in networks we have been giving old software versions the heave-ho, with the start of the rollout for our DSL termination rack upgrades, which has gone swimmingly. Further work to slim down our power consumption has continued, with quite a few older servers being made to walk the plank. Problems have been worked on as usual, and this has included getting connectivity fixed via some splicing (fibres, not the mainbrace unfortunately) (ooh very good Lee - Cap'n) And to round off, there have been some changes to consolidate our 'who goes there' department (ie radius authentication), oh yes they aaarrrrrr!!   Marketing (Pirate Phil) I've just chopped off Spencer's wooden leg (it had woodworm) and fashioned a writing device for today's EOD. Chris sent 3x varieties of email about our home phone products today - it's been a while since we mentioned them last. At the same time Spence, Shailini, Amy and Sameer have been further improving with the click path between pages based on feedback. For me, I have been mostly saying 'thanks' and 'goodbye' because it's my final day as part of the Plusnet team. It's been a massive part of my life and I'm proud to have helped build the best ISP Sheffield could ever hope to see. Take care! (It doesn't seem but five minutes since I interviewed you and yer joined my team over at Internet House MkI.  Well alright it does.. it feels exactly like the 7 years it has been.  Best of luck in the big smoke yaar pirate - Cap'n)   From the H-Arrrrrr team (Pirate Jen) Quite fitting really that Amanda feels like she's been bobbing about on a boat all day. Though I reckon ‘tis more to do with her jet lag than any pirate-y action on her part. Anyway, she's spent the day catching up after her travels to shores afar. We've not had too much to rock our boat at good ship Plusnet either, although I had a bit of sea sickness midweek! Business as usual has included the following: Chasing 360 feedback Dev consultations Credit control assistant interviews Employee relations stuff CIPHR consultant Accommodation & transport bookings Starters and leavers Childcare vouchers Partnership Group meeting preparation  Well, they've all deserted thar deck apart from me so I think that'll about covered it.   So, that's yer lot for another pirate day at Plusnet. Have ye a fabulous weekend and I'll be seein' ye next week. P-j
