End of Day: 31st July

July 31st, 2008 at 17:30 by Rupert Jones

The end of the world is nigh! Or at least, that’s what it looks like out of our window, with the sky glowering, the rain cascading down, and it feeling like it’s almost night at 3pm! We all remember what happened last year when we had torrential rain… :-(

Anyway, onto the updates, and the first is from Rizwan in Networks:

Hi! Rizwan here from networks. I am going to bring you today’s EOD from networks. Not the noisiest or warmest day today however a lot of things have been going on in the background. We have been trying to improve systems to cope with abuse and misuse. We had a number of meetings regarding this and a set of actions were derived from this. Hopefully this will give us the ability to proactively address issues in future. I have been personally busy trying to resolve and target spammers who try to abuse the system. Here is what the rest of the team has been up to:

D Scotland: Has been busy upgrading various systems with most recent patches and updates.

I Glennon: Working on Homepages/FTP related project to consolidate services.

M Roebuck: Has been answering customer questions and resolving customer problems.

M Presson: Has had the duty of doing misc tasks and problems.

R Pearce: Upgrading internal server patching, debugging and monitoring the impact of upgrades.

R Martin: Has been doing a variety of monitoring enhancements including watching his car over webcams.

B Brown: Resolving issues related to spam and new signups.

S Routledge: Been bravely keeping an eye on systems platform.

S Bedford: Been working on DNS additions, housekeeping and variety of meetings.

M Hanley: Stepped up to improve performance on slow databases queries.

J Readman: Working on prodcing various reports for products and marketing department.

G Mitchell: Attending various meetings for general platform improvements.

That is it from networks, until next

bye

Thanks for that, Riz. Now for the daily Comms update from Chris

Bob, when he eventually turned up, had to go pretty much straight into meetings. He then battled through some problems and did some tidying up of a ticket pool that had got a bit neglected.

James says he’s been in the forums, giving some training, doing task work and working on problems. I’m not sure he has though, all I’ve noticed him doing is drumming his fingers on the desk all day. I’ve told him I’ll cut them off if he doesn’t stop.

Matt’s been, well I don’t actually know because when I asked people what they had been doing he walked off. So I’ll assume he’s been dealing with home phone queries, looking at some problems and doing dev change controls.

I’ve been handling network change controls, sorting some problems, helping Bob with the ticket pools he made a mess of and generally being awesome.
I also received quite possibly the most evil spam subject line ever. What did the puppies ever do to them?

So that just leaves the link for today, I’ve not actually thought about this until now so it’s a bit of a spur of the moment linkage decision. With that in mind, here it is

And now, an update from CSC by Martin:

Here are the top 5 issues for yet another busy day in the life of CSC

1. Order Update: we have had a number of calls to confirm the progress of their orders and the installation process.

2. Router Setups: new customers needing a little help form our friendly support to connect for the first time.

3. Fault Update: “Why can’t I connect?” is the cry of customers with faults and “When will it be fixed?”

4. E-mail setup: our Customers calling with general setup problems and issues with accessing their mailboxes

5. Username/Password: we’re always getting calls from customers that just need that password reminder or the full username for their broadband connection.

And finally, a last minute submission from Lukasz in Development:

Hi from rainy Sheffield, It’s been almost one month since I joined Team Zaki to help with support of second part of the Brigthtview project.
Today I was working on some problems and I was using TDD (Test Driven Development) methodology during refactoring (improving) code and I have found it very helpful. I have learned a lot of very useful things about UnitTests from Seb in last few days.
As he mentioned in yesterday’s EOD post, he is very busy. He was working on his own project and in the meantime was helping and teaching me about TDD stuff (Ed: And me too… Seb is our Unit Test expert!). We are doing all that TDD things to write better, valuable code in our systems.

The guys from the Teleworker team were preparing to roll one of their projects out to the beta platform next week and test it with QAs.
The rest of the developers on our floor were busy doing some great work on project which we are going to roll out live next week.

I’m really excited about next week’s workshops and presentations about TDD, JavaScript Frameworks and security, which developers from our department will run. That will be a great opportunity to discuss new technologies and solutions which can help us in our work on current and future projects.

I will tell you something… I’m very excited about one more thing. After next week I’m going to Poland for my wedding. I hope that the weather will be better than today in Sheffield. Fingers crossed…

That’s all for today! See you all next time!

Can I just say that I do find the EODs look a lot clearer and easier to read when people use block quotes as in today's - if all the EOD editors could get in the habit of doing so it would be appreciated.

LiamM

I'd agree with that, Thomas.

James

Mmm, definitely agree.

Good job Roo.

Did anyone see the rain last night?
I woke up around 2 or 3 am to the lightning, thunder and torrential rain!

It was fierce!

James

I heard about it, but it didn't wake me up.

I was dead to the world :)

Andrew B

My room is the attic in our house, and my bed is under the window...

So yes I heard it.. *bleary eyed*

No one sending best wishes to Lucasz in Development for his wedding in Poland? Then I will (though he'll be there by now I suppose). Wish I could write this in Polish, but anyway,
every good wish for the future to you both from a Scots member!
