End of Day: 29th July

July 29th, 2008 at 17:49 by Peter Jackson

Coming up for air from my afternoon’s spreadsheeting I find it’s already five o’clock and it’s time.. no, alas not for Crackerjack, but for the usual roundup of happenings here at the Towers.

But.. It’s going to be a quick roundup by the looks of it, because for some inexplicable reason I think a lot of people have forgotten us dear readers.

Ben hasn’t.  So here’s his update from Networks:

Evening all, it’s Ben again from Networks. Today I’ve been working on some monitoring for our portal backend servers and passing some of my CGI knowledge onto my colleagues in Ops before my move to the Networks Development team next week.

Ade’s been working on decommissioning some of our old load balancers and testing our aggregators and RADIUS for new product development. Denis has been working on improving the resilience of our connection to SA. Carl’s working on our new Data Centre, and Bedders and Mike have been working on some new web storage for our most recently acquired vISPs.

Matt’s been having fun with our phone system, sorting out the IVR for new product development (again). Riz and Russ have been keeping an eye on the relay servers on our platform and watching out for accounts used to send large amounts of spam through our system.

Rick’s been continuing the sterling work he did on our customer facing DNS servers on our internal ones – If you’ve not been keeping up there’s a massive bug with the DNS protocol which was discovered recently, there’s a blog Ian wrote about it on the community site at the moment.

Geoff’s been rolling out a new authentication system on sections of our platform, and rebuilding our test email server.

Aaron’s been looking at our postmaster mailbox, as well as supporting PAYH and Port995 customers, and chasing a problem we have raised with Postini, and Sarah’s been keeping a watchful eye on the platform.

Comms’ Matt hasn’t forgotten us either:

Poor Bob. Just when he thought he’d escaped the clutches of problem testing (yep, that’s been what he’s been up to for most of today). He also made tea (and for those of you who follow these things it’s been a very, very busy day too).

Chris has been picking up Networks change controls (what with Bob being so busy and all), has been in several forums, has been picking up some problems and has also been sorting stuff for the Aladdin trial.

Once James had gotten his morning PMs out of the way he also waded into the problem pool but has also been writing training, has had a few meetings and has also covered most of the forum action.

I’ve been up to my ears in Home Phone for most of the day but a couple of meetings and some problems stuff, along with Development change controls has kept me busy (I hope you’re all keeping count).

So that’s been about it. Not a typical tuesday but not an unpleasant one. Random link? OK, try this. It’s for Tommo really, but everyone likes cheese don’t they?

So that’s it for today. I guess everyone has been truly busy.

Pete
