Now I’ve done the End of Day once I am called upon to do it again… Once you know how to do something you become renowned as an expert in it. Alas, this is the curse of being a developer, where even looking at a piece of code makes you the go-to guy for it. Well, enough of my musings, down to the updates
James wins the race with the first update from Comms:
As soon as I realised that I needed to start writing this EoD summary for Comms, I realised that suddenly everyone had disappeared. Bob’s having his performance review, Matt’s giving a presentation about Tickets to some of our Developers and Chris is having some writing training to improve his level of literacy (definitely needed).
Today I’ve been sat in a bunch of meetings and generally running round the building talking to various people about bits and pieces. Along with that, I’ve been posting in our forums, doing a bunch of project work, writing some training and answering a few calls!
Matt’s been sat next to me most of the day, doing his Development Change Controls, preparing some training and attending a few meetings.
Bob’s been having words with his laptop along with forum posting, Network Change Controls and attending a few meetings.
Chris has been learning how to write properly, buying sharp knives and a coffee machine. He’s also been doing various bits and pieces such is his normal daily routine.
I’m afraid that I don’t really have a random link of the day as mine seem to have generally been deemed rubbish by the rest of the team, but here’s the latest thing for the Wii lovers to spend their hard earned cash on.
See you soon
James
Coming in second is Geoff with the Networks department:
The DBA’s have been hard at work reviewing changes, and making sure the platform performs correctly after yesterday’s data updates. When possible they have also been looking at WLR and the data held in the database, making sure it is accurate and optimal.
Operations today, like many a day, have been diligently working through the tickets and problems in their pool. Even though the platform is stable, there are always problems to be worked. When time has allowed, they have also been upgrading databases in our staging platform, and looking at our platform backup systems. Patching for security issues relating to DNS problems has been on-going to make sure there are no documented vulnerabilities.
Beyond the operational tasks that are essential to providing the service, people have been working on our network link to our colleagues in South Africa. Hardware consolidation is also a priority, so as to make sure our platform is scalable and runs optimally. This consolidation work includes the task of replicating the service offered by part of the platform down in London back onto our equipment in Sheffield. This requires a large amount of planning to minimise any impact to the service which is offered.

And our final update of the day comes from good ol’ James in the Web Team:
Nick - has been working on general MAAF support material and also support emails and pages for PlusNet products.
Jonny - has temporarily moved desks to support the Project Team designers on their Portal design tasks, and has been undertaking some Greenbee project scoping.
The GMan - has been having some design discussions with me about Customer Generated Support Pages and working on Portal design.
Mark - creating a support article for a new piece of hardware.
Wojtek - has been winding Jonny up all day and has been working on Portal design
Sam - temporarily pulled off the new My Account project to help out with some Portal design work.
Rupert - has been working on Personal Details development for My Account.
Colin - has been planning some of the other functionality in My Account.
I’ve been refining the smart-search bar and done some more basic design work on the home page for Customer Generated Support Pages

This is Rupert Jones at PlusNet Towers signing off (thankfully not singing off, which would be sheer torture for those around me).
Until next time, groovers.
