End of Day: 30th June

June 30th, 2008 at 17:32 by Colin Ogilvie

It’s Monday, the 30th June, 2008 (just in case you hadn’t realised by now ;)). It’s also sunny (which is slightly annoying since we’re in the office), pay day (which is good!) and also half way through the year (crikey!). On with what’s been happening in the PlusNet offices.

First up, we have Adheel in the CSC:

Hey peeps, a steady Monday morning in the CSC with the main topic of conversation (non-work related) relating to the football last night, well done to anyone backing Spain! ( I’m out £20 as I was backing the Dutch :-( )

The Top 5 in the CSC for today is as follows:

1) Fault Updates - Customers calling in for a update or to supply new details on their broadband faults. The most common faults being issues related to No or Intermittent broadband synchronisation, meaning a loss of broadband signal to customers modem or router.

2) House Moves - A large number of customers calling in regarding impending house moves, tying into the fact more people move house in the summer and are looking to ensure there are no delays in moving their broadband and house services.

3) Email Set-ups - A number of new customers calling in for advice on setting up additional mailboxes, or setting up their email clients such as the ever popular Outlook and Thunderbird applications, as well as Mac Mail and Entourage.

4) Provisioning Updates - Customers who have signed up with us recently chasing activation dates or other information.

5) Billing - Customers calling in to supply new payment details or responding to left messages or tickets on their account advising of outstanding amounts. Payment being taken after these details being updated.

Chris from Comms brings us the following update:

Just a quick one from the land of Comms today, here we go around the team.

Matt has been buried under a pile of problems and change controls. I think James has been with the sales team even though I haven’t seen him all day. I’ve been in a couple of meetings and handling network change controls.

And here is Captain Kirk and Spock performing Pulp’s Common People - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXWEM4gZhg4

Enjoy

Colin (Yes, I know that’s me…) from the Web Dev:

Rupert has been looking at refactoring some of our code for the current project he’s working on, while Colin has been working on some of the items raised in PUGIT, and some Community Site code (while organising this week’s EOD rota). Andy’s been working on problem fixes, while the project team continue battling away on bugs and problems.

Next up we have Rys from Dev:

Just a quick one from Dev, too. Today I spent some time writing an auto class generator for the ORM implementation in the in-house PlusNet application framework, before using it in anger to write the DB layer for the code I’m working on at the moment. Exciting stuff if you’re a programming nerd.

Dev as a whole is slowing down a little after delivering Brighview Phase 2, which means we’re renewing some focus on some neglected bits of process and departmental functionality that we’ve not had time to focus on recently. It’s all very welcome.

Lastly, a warm welcome (back for Arun, good to see you again my friend!) to a couple of QBurst’s finest, who are here in the UK to help me and my dev lead out on our project.

Making some of us jealous, is Matt from Networks:

Today has been a bit of a shock to the system for me having just got back from my jollies, but never mind, until next time I guess :(

The guys have been dealing with the normal day to day stuff, us ticket guys have got the numbers down today which is always a good thing at the start of the week. Alongside the normal operational housekeeping tasks some of the guys have been working on the Ellacoya databases and planning some core database upgrades for the near future. Further improvements have been made to the monitoring systems and the Ellacoya’s today as well.

Apart from a bit of rain dodging that’s it for another day in Networks.

Catch ya later

Matt

That’s it for today, I’m off home to hopefully watch the tennis.

Colin
