Wow – a late End of Day today, although I don’t think it’s the latest one there’s been so far! I got so engrossed in writing some documentation, doing some rollouts for bug fixes and munching on dinner (thanks!) that I completely forgot to post this until Tommo mentioned he won’t be doing tomorrow’s End of Day (as he’s on holiday). Still, one quick trip to the VPN and I’ve got the contents!
First up, we have Dev Delivering Early (unlike me
) from Paul
Summer has come to Sheffield today. It’s sunny and pleasantly warm. It’ll surely move on to grace other places in Britain during the course of the coming months.
It’s all go in Dev at the moment – when isn’t it? This week there’s a definite sense of getting to the end of something big, something to celebrate. At the same time, there’s a touch of sadness as two of our esteemed colleagues have decided to move on to pastures new.
Myself and a few colleagues attended the Sheffield GeekUp last night. As usual, it was an interesting mix of discussion and presentations – from Agile to A.I. to Mariokart to Open Street Maps – all smoothed out by the excellent beer served at The Fat Cat. Like last time, we packed out the pub so there are plans afoot to migrate to a larger venue. Big thanks go to Jag for organising the event and proving that geeks can be herded, sometimes for profit, always for fun.

¡À bientôt!
Next up we have James from the Comms Team (we think…):
Another week starts to draw to a close as the weather forecast starts to change the the worst.
Speaking about changes, Boblé and Mand have been handling change controls. Boblé’s also been looking into ADSL2+ stuff as well as the odd post in forums.
Chris claims to have been doing bits and pieces, which probably means he’s not fone that much today.
Matt’s also been doing some change controls, looking into the provision of lines for the LAN Party in Doncaster, posting in the forums and testing some problems.
Funnily enough, I’ve been sat with the Sales Team for a change. But I’ve also been going to a couple of meetings and posting in the forums.
A “new” starter in Marketing, Amy brings us this update:
Today we’ve been prototyping web pages for a forthcoming promotion (much like yesterday), looked at some recruitment stuff and sent out an email to customers on dial.
Chris disappeared at lunchtime to spend a fortune in GAME to procrastinate this evening instead of building furniture as he should be, and Amy got more up to speed on Chris’s daily tasks. working through getting set up on all the correct mailing lists.
Last, but by no means least, is John from our DBA Team with the Networks update:
- Net Ops
The usual stout work on housekeeping and monitoring the platform and addressing customer issues through tickets plus some prep work for our data centre consolidation.
- Net Dev
all sorts – including:
Building servers for a new business product trial due to start in July
Activating a segment on our new 622 Central
Ellacoya Upgrade work
Brightview phase 2 supportGeoff has been looking at openLaszlo, specifically the gowebtop product as a potential webmail system. OpenLaszlo though provides a good framework/language on which web 2.0 applications can be developed with presentation in flash or DHTML. Therefore, we are looking at options for this system beyond the scope of just webmail, which is nice
- DBAs
Monitoring our database platforms and further improving the documentation thereof as well as servicing analysis and reporting data requests from around the business
I’ll consider my wrists well and truly slapped for not getting this out on time,
Colin
